CHICAGO- United Airlines (UA) flight from Chicago O’Hare (ORD) to Phoenix Int’l Airport (PHX) diverted to Albuquerque International Airport (ABQ) amid smoke in the cockpit on December 28, 2024.

A Chicago-based carrier operates half a dozen flights on a 2,317-kilometer (1439-mile) Chicago-Phoenix route.

United Airlines Flight Diverted

According to FlightRadar24, United flight UA2225 (UAL2225) took off from Chicago at 3:43 PM UTC. After being airborne for over two hours and 30 minutes, the flight crew reported smoke in the cockpit.

The pilots did not declare an emergency, instead, they decided to make a precautionary landing at Albuquerque. The aircraft landed safely at 6:43 AM UTC.

The flight was operated by Boeing 757-324, registered as N57857. Further, it is a 21-year-old aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce (RR) engines.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) shared preliminary details on its Aviation Accidents and Incidents page and stated,

United Airlines Flight 2225 landed safely at Albuquerque International Sunport in New Mexico around 11:45 a.m. local time on Saturday, Dec. 28, after the crew reported smoke in the cockpit. The Boeing 757 departed Chicago O’Hare International Airport and was en route to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Further, the FAA will investigate the incident to find out the exact cause of this issue.

Similar Incidents

On November 26, 2024, A Wizz Air (W6) flight operating between Gdansk and Tromso diverted to Stockholm Arlanda Airport on November 16, 2024, after crew members detected smoke in the cabin. Flight W61771 departed Gdansk at 6:04 PM local time and encountered the issue approximately 30 minutes into the flight while cruising at 35,000 feet.

Delta Air Lines (DL) encountered a similar incident on November 6, 2024, when flight DL850 from Atlanta to Washington D.C. diverted to Raleigh-Durham International Airport due to fumes in the cockpit. Delta officials confirmed the diversion was executed as a precautionary measure.

These incidents follow two smoke-related diversions in 2023. A Spirit Airlines (NK) Airbus A320 made an emergency landing in Fort Lauderdale on August 3 during its Orlando to Bogota route, resulting in injuries to four cabin crew members. On July 4, a United Airlines Boeing 777 returned to Los Angeles International Airport after smoke appeared on the flight deck, with all passengers and crew landing safely.
