Kenya Airways Passenger Dies Mid-Flight

On April 11, 2025, Kenya Airways (KQ) flight KQ 003, operating from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi, encountered a tragic event.

At approximately 08:40 Nairobi time, an elderly passenger suffered a medical emergency and collapsed.

The flight crew promptly notified the airline’s Operations Control Centre and initiated emergency procedures.

Three qualified medical professionals onboard volunteered to assist, utilizing the aircraft’s medical equipment in an attempt to stabilize the passenger. Despite these efforts, the passenger’s condition deteriorated rapidly.

To expedite urgent medical care, the flight diverted to Entebbe International Airport (EBB) in Uganda.

However, at 09:10 East Africa Time (EAT), before the aircraft could land, attending medical professionals pronounced the passenger deceased.

Following the confirmation of the fatality, the crew resumed the journey to Nairobi, landing at 10:27 Nairobi time.

Upon arrival, Kenya Airways’ contracted medical team, airport security, and relevant authorities met the aircraft to handle the situation per established protocols.

The response to the emergency adhered to international aviation medical protocols. Kenya Airways’ crew, trained for such scenarios, coordinated with onboard medical volunteers to provide immediate care.

The availability of onboard medical equipment, standard on long-haul flights, supported these efforts.

The decision to divert to Entebbe reflected a priority on accessing advanced medical facilities as quickly as possible.

Despite the outcome, the coordinated response underscores the airline’s preparedness for in-flight emergencies, though it could not alter the tragic result in this case.
