What is a PAPI System?

A Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) system assists pilots in maintaining correct landing trajectories through strategic light positioning.

The system uses color-coded lights to provide visual guidance during aircraft descent, enabling pilots to assess their approach angle accurately.

Four lights along the runway emit red and white colors, signaling pilots’ vertical position relative to the ideal glide path. When pilots observe an equal number of red and white lights, they confirm they are on the correct descent trajectory.

Located adjacent to the runway’s landing threshold, PAPI systems help ensure safe and precise aircraft landings by providing immediate visual feedback to pilots during critical approach phases.

Key operational characteristics:

  • Provides real-time visual altitude assessment during landing
  • Utilizes color differentiation to indicate vertical positioning
  • Enables pilots to make immediate trajectory corrections
  • Enhances overall aviation safety through precise approach guidance

Launch in 2025

Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) is developing Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), marking a significant expansion of Mumbai’s aviation infrastructure. As the second international airport serving Mumbai, this project represents a critical step in addressing the region’s growing air transportation needs.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the project by laying its foundation stone on February 18, 2018, with actual construction commencing in August 2021. The airport will occupy a substantial 1,160-hectare site, designed to meet extensive aviation requirements.

The airport’s comprehensive development plan includes multiple critical infrastructure components. Two parallel runways will form the airport’s core, complemented by four passenger terminals, a dedicated cargo terminal, and specialized zones for aviation support services. The design also incorporates a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) zone, General Aviation hangars, and provisions for corporate and residential developments.

A significant milestone occurred on October 11, 2024, when the Indian Air Force’s Airbus C295 aircraft successfully completed the first landing on NMIA’s Southern Runway (RY08/26). This achievement signals substantial progress in the airport’s operational readiness and infrastructure development.

AAHL has strategically planned the airport’s operational launch in phases. Domestic operations are scheduled to commence by March 2025, with international services expected to follow in June 2025.
