KLM, VNV Pilot Union New Deal to Work Extra Day in A Month in 2026

2 godzin temu

AMSTELVEEN- KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KL) and its pilot union VNV have reached a preliminary agreement aimed at stabilizing operations and expanding flight capacity.

The deal includes key measures that will allow the airline to operate over 10,000 additional flights from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), starting in summer 2026.

The agreement addresses staffing shortages by modifying pilot scheduling and training procedures. Pilots will contribute extra availability, while KLM commits to improved conditions, including compensation and readiness for Airbus A350 integration.

KLM Pilot Union Deal

The new agreement between KLM (KL) and VNV is structured to help the airline meet its growing operational needs without compromising long-term financial health.

At its core, the deal introduces targeted staffing and scheduling solutions designed to support recovery under KLM’s Back-on-Track program.

One key change is that pilots will work one additional day per month during the peak summer season in 2026. KLM will also be allowed to assign one extra workday per quarter during pilots’ weekends, enabling more flexible crew planning.

These measures are expected to add over 10,000 flights, significantly increasing passenger capacity from Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS).

The agreement includes a temporary framework to bridge current staffing gaps until all positions are filled. In parallel, updated training protocols will allow simulator sessions and exams to be scheduled during weekends, ensuring faster onboarding of new and transitioning pilots.

Enhancing Training and Flight Readiness

To keep pace with fleet expansion and aircraft upgrades, the agreement outlines operational updates. KLM will accelerate pilot training, with the flexibility to schedule sessions during weekends. This enables quicker responses to shifting market conditions and route demands.

A major component involves preparing for the introduction of the Airbus A350. The airline and union have agreed on rest area modifications inside the aircraft—extended beds tailored for taller Dutch crew members—so the aircraft can be deployed on long-haul routes soon after delivery.

These technical and procedural updates are part of a broader strategy to modernize KLM’s fleet and increase efficiency without overextending current staff.

Balanced Investment in People and Performance

The deal isn’t just about squeezing more hours from pilots—it also brings tangible benefits. KLM has agreed to make permanent a discounted travel scheme previously available once a year.

Additional forms of compensation are under discussion and expected to be finalized once VNV members vote on the agreement in September.

KLM’s HR Director Miriam Kartman called the deal a “crucial step” in the airline’s financial recovery, emphasizing collaboration and mutual benefit. Ruud Stegers, chairman of VNV, echoed this sentiment, noting that pilots are structurally contributing to KLM’s long-term stability.

Both sides recognize that sustainable recovery hinges on joint commitment—and this deal reflects that alignment.
