OSAKA- Kansai International Airport (KIX) is set to unveil its newly upgraded Terminal 1 on March 27, 2025, marking a major milestone in its multi-phase redevelopment project.

The expansion enhances passenger facilities, retail options, and operational efficiency in preparation for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan.

This latest upgrade follows the successful completion of the new domestic area in 2022 and the airside departures area in December 2023.

The redevelopment aims to increase international passenger capacity to 40 million by 2026.

Kansai Airport Terminal 1 Opening

The Kansai International Airport (KIX) new Terminal 1 renovation focuses on enhancing the international flight experience, optimizing landsides and airside operations, and expanding commercial spaces. Notable improvements include:

  • New International Security Checkpoint: Upgraded for streamlined passenger screening and reduced wait times.
  • Expanded International Lounge: Offering a more spacious and comfortable experience for travelers.
  • Redesigned International and Domestic Areas: Enhancing passenger flow and convenience.
  • Increased Retail and Dining Options: Eleven new outlets will debut in March, offering an expanded selection of shopping and dining.

Enhanced Customer Experience

The March 2025 expansion introduces a variety of retail and dining options, significantly improving the passenger experience.

Among the new additions, the KIX Duty Free Arrivals Shops, located in both the north and south sections of Level 3, will offer a range of tax-free shopping options. These stores cater to international passengers looking for premium goods upon arrival.

For everyday essentials, a Lawson Convenience Store will open in the Level 4 Commercial Area, ensuring travelers have access to snacks, beverages, and travel necessities.

Additionally, the Gowell Select Travel Essentials Store in the same area will provide specialized travel items to meet passenger needs.

Shoppers looking for unique regional products can visit the One Village One Product Market, also located in the Level 4 Commercial Area, which will showcase locally made goods and souvenirs.

Another exciting addition is the Gacha-Matsuri Capsule Toy Store, offering a variety of collectible capsule toys popular in Japanese culture.

For dining, the Nihonbashi Tendon Kaneko Hannosuke restaurant will open in the Level 2 Commercial Area, bringing an authentic Japanese dining experience to travelers.

The restaurant is known for its high-quality tempura rice bowls, making it a must-visit for food enthusiasts.

Additionally, connectivity services will be enhanced with the introduction of Global WiFi, Imotono WiFi, and Telecom Square in the Level 4 Commercial Area.

These providers will offer WiFi and SIM card rental services, ensuring passengers can stay connected during their travels.

Kansai Airports’ redevelopment aligns with Japan’s preparations for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, running from April 13 to October 13, 2025.
