NEW YORK- The home carrier of New York, JetBlue Airways (B6) announced operational changes on Wednesday (December 4, 2024), targeting unprofitable routes and optimizing its aircraft deployment strategy.

The airline will eliminate several underperforming flight routes and adjust its service configuration to improve financial performance.

JetBlue Cuts More Routes

The carrier will cut flights from multiple cities, including:

  • Fort Lauderdale to Jacksonville
  • New York’s JFK Airport to Austin, Houston, Miami, and Milwaukee
  • Westchester to Milwaukee
  • Service to San Jose, California

The airline will also discontinue using Mint business class planes on Seattle routes starting in April. This move follows the company’s strategic efforts to streamline operations and reduce costs.

Regarding the JFK to Miami route discontinuation, JetBlue acknowledged potential staff overstaffing in Miami. The company is proactively working with crew members to explore alternative employment options in other cities within its network.

JetBlue’s vice president of network planning, Dave Jehn, revealed the airline’s strategic network adjustments in an internal memo. Despite Florida remaining a strong market, the carrier has struggled with profitability in Miami due to competition from legacy carriers like American (AA) and Delta Air Lines (DL).

The airline will maintain the Boston to Miami service while making route modifications.

European Flight Route Cuts

JetBlue plans to announce new European services next week but will reduce its transatlantic routes.

Specifically, the carrier will eliminate its second New York JFK-Paris flight and discontinue summer-only service between New York and London’s Gatwick Airport starting in the summer 2025 travel season.

These changes followed better-than-expected revenue and booking performance in November and December, which boosted the company’s stock by over 8%.

CEO Joanna Geraghty and her team are actively addressing cost reduction and removing unprofitable routes, particularly on the West Coast. The airline is simultaneously managing challenges from Pratt & Whitney engine groundings and post-pandemic market shifts.

JetBlue has committed to customer support during these changes. Affected passengers can select alternative flight options or receive refunds if no comparable routes exist.

The company stated its goal is to redeploy resources, including its popular Mint service, toward high-demand markets and emerging opportunities.
