SEATTLE- Atlanta-based carrier, Delta Air Lines (DL), faced another security incident when an unticketed passenger (stowaway) boarded flight DL487 from Seattle (SEA) to Honolulu (HNL) on Christmas Eve (December 24, 2024).

The crew discovered the stowaway during the taxi, prompting an immediate return to the gate.

Delta Air Lines 2nd Stowaway

This incident follows a similar breach last month when another unticketed individual attempted to reach France on a Delta flight. The airline has not released the identity of the latest stowaway.

The unauthorized boarding triggered extensive security measures. TSA conducted additional screenings of all passengers, causing a two-hour flight delay. Law enforcement detained the individual at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

The flight was operated by a 1.6-year-old Airbus A321neo, registered as N538DN.

Delta’s initial investigation reveals the passenger bypassed gate security by boarding without showing a boarding pass.

Delta said in a statement to ABC News:

As there are no matters more important than safety and security, Delta people followed procedures to have an unticketed passenger removed from the flight and then apprehended.”

Russian-Origin Stowaway

A 57-year-old Russian woman who illegally boarded a Delta flight from JFK to Paris now faces complications returning to the United States. She breached JFK security checkpoints and remained undetected until landing in Paris, where French authorities denied her asylum request.

The woman’s first return attempt failed when she caused disruption before takeoff on a Saturday Delta flight. A second attempt on Tuesday’s Delta flight DL265 ended when the airline refused to transport her despite her successful boarding.

TSA confirmed she cleared security checks without prohibited items. Investigators believe she evaded flight attendants by hiding in the aircraft bathroom during the original flight to Paris.

Delta rejected transporting her even with six U.S. marshals as escorts, though the U.S. Marshals Service states they were not involved in this operation. International aviation rules require airlines to return passengers denied entry.

Second Attempt

Authorities arrested Svetlana Dali, a 57-year-old US permanent resident, on Monday after she attempted to flee to Canada by bus. This follows her earlier unauthorized Delta flight from JFK to Paris.

Dali removed her court-mandated ankle monitor from her friend’s Philadelphia apartment, violating conditions set at her December 5th federal court hearing in Brooklyn. She purchased a bus ticket to Canada, contrasting with her previous passport-free Paris flight.

Law enforcement caught Dali in Buffalo during her border crossing attempt. Barbara Burns from the U.S. Attorney’s office confirmed her detention. Dali faces a Tuesday hearing with Magistrate Judge Michael J. Roemer before returning to Brooklyn custody.
