MIAMI- Fort Worth-based American Airlines (AA) flight from Miami International Airport (MIA) to George Town Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) makes a U-turn to Miami amid a burning smell from the electrical system inside the cabin on Friday, January 24, 2025.

As per the published schedule, American Airlines operates two daily flights between Miami and George Town with Boeing 737.

American Airlines Flight U-Turn

According to FlightRadar24 data, American Airlines flight AA1300 took off from Miami at 4:00 PM UTC. Shortly after takeoff, the crew stopped climbing at 22,000 feet and decided to divert back to Miami.

Without burning extra fuel needed to reach George Town, Cayman Islands, the flight made a heavy landing at Miami at 4:43 PM UTC, almost 45 minutes later.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported the incident in its Aviation Accidents and Incidents page and stated,

American Airlines Flight 1300 returned safely to Miami International Airport around 11:45 a.m. local time on Friday, Jan. 24, after the crew reported an electrical smell in the cabin. The Boeing 737-800 was headed to the Cayman Islands.

Further, the FAA has said that they will investigate the incident to find out the exact details of this diversion.

The aircraft involved in the incident is Boeing 737-823, registered as N907NN. Further, it is a 12.3-year-old aircraft powered by two CFM 56-7B engines.

The airline arranged another aircraft and operated a flight to George Town. The passengers reached their intended destination three hours and 23 minutes later than the actual arrival time.
