LOS ANGELES— On September 28, an American Airlines (AA) Airbus A321 was forced to abort its takeoff at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) after an AeroLogic Boeing 777 unexpectedly crossed the active runway.
The American Airlines flight was accelerating for departure when the crew noticed the Boeing 777 cargo aircraft entering the runway intersection. Quick decision-making by the A321 pilots to brake the aircraft to halt prevented a potentially dangerous runway incursion.

American Airlines Aborting Takeoff
According to CNN, AA’s Airbus A321 (Flight 2453) was preparing for departure to Boston. The publication further noted:
The Boeing 777 was waiting between two runways to taxi to its parking spot as American Airlines flight 2453 was preparing for takeoff for Boston. Air traffic control directed the AeroLogic flight to cross runway 25L, but instead the pilots made a right turn, putting them in the path of the jet.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also confirmed that the aircraft operated by AeroLogic had crossed runway 25R “without authorization”.
Despite the sudden maneuver, no injuries were reported, and the aircraft later returned to the gate for safety checks. American Airlines confirmed the event, noting that passenger safety was never compromised.
The airline emphasized that its flight crew responded exactly as trained, halting the takeoff in a controlled manner. The American Airlines flight 2453 returned to the gate and took off for Boston 2.5 hours later.
AeroLogic has not issued a detailed statement, but the incident remains under review.

FAA Investigates Runway Incursion
The FAA has launched an investigation into the incident at LAX. Investigators will examine whether miscommunication or timing errors contributed to the close call.
Runway incursions are among the most serious safety risks in aviation. The FAA and international regulators have implemented advanced systems and strict procedures to reduce such events.
However, human error and high-traffic conditions can still lead to near misses at major hubs like Los Angeles. One might feel that there has been a discernible rise in runway incursions but that is not the case, reports Simple Flying:
The 2020s have seen a noticeable rise in publicity regarding runway incursions and airborne near-misses. However, much of this is due to an increase in attention and awareness about such incidents rather than an actual rise in these events.

Bottom Line
The incident at Los Angeles International Airport underscores how even brief lapses can result in dangerous situations.
Fortunately, in this case, the professionalism of the American Airlines crew ensured the safety of everyone on board.
