American Airlines 737 and Frontier A321 Damaged at Cleveland Airport

DALLAS- Fort Worth-based American Airlines (AA) Boeing 737 aircraft and Denver-based Frontier Airlines (F9) Airbus A321 collided with ground vehicles this week at Cleveland International Airport on consecutive days.

Both these incidents are reported by carriers to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and shared on its Aviation Accidents and Incidents.

American Airlines Deicing Truck Collision

According to the FAA, On Monday, January 20, 2025, at 9:25 AM local time, American Airlines flight AA1315 was struck by a deicing truck at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE).

Following this, the aircraft was towed to the gate. FAA said that this incident occurred outside of Air Traffic Control (ATC) Area.

According to the flightradar24 data, American Airlines flight AA1315 was scheduled to depart from Cleveland at 6:40 AM local time and arrive at Chicago O’Hare (ORD). However, it was delayed due to deicing operations and later due to damage.

The aircraft involved in the incident is a Boeing 737-800, registered as N965NN. Further, it is a 10-year-old aircraft, powered by CFM 56-7B engines.

Failure During Gate Pushback

A towbar on an airport tow tug broke and struck a Frontier Airlines (F9) Airbus A321 during a gate pushback at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport around 2 a.m. on Monday, January 20.

The incident prompted passenger evacuation, with travelers bused to the terminal. The flight, originally destined for Miami International Airport, was disrupted by the equipment malfunction.

The FlightRadar24 data shows that Frontier Airlines flight F94136 was scheduled to depart from Cleveland at 9:29 AM local time and arrive at Miami International Airport (MIA) at 12:28 PM local time. However, the flight was delayed following the incident.

There were 110 passengers, four cabin crew, and two flight crew onboard the Airbus A321-200. The aircraft involved in the incident is registered as N720FR and it’s a 7.3-year-old plane.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will conduct an investigation into the incident.

Similar Incidents

Two separate aircraft collision incidents involving American Airlines and Frontier Airlines occurred at Miami International Airport and Boston Logan International Airport in March and November 2024, respectively.

At Miami International Airport on March 7, 2024, an American Airlines Boeing 777 collided with a Frontier Airlines Airbus A321neo during a reverse maneuver around 8:30 p.m. Video footage captured an airport employee rushing onto the tarmac to halt the American plane’s movement.

The Frontier aircraft, which was preparing for passenger boarding, sustained impact. Frontier confirmed that only crew members were on board, with no reported injuries, and the airline is assessing damage and re-accommodating customers.

A similar incident transpired at Boston Logan International Airport on November 25, 2024, when an American Airlines plane clipped the wing of a Frontier Airlines aircraft at Terminal E.

The Frontier flight, en route to Dallas with 200 passengers, experienced no injuries to passengers or crew. American Airlines reported that its Flight 109, arriving from London’s Heathrow Airport, made contact with a parked aircraft while pulling into the gate.

Massport, managing Boston Logan, characterized the incident as minor and occurring at low speed. Both airlines issued apologies for passenger inconvenience, and the American Airlines aircraft was removed from service for maintenance inspection.
