ISTANBUL– A Vietnam Airlines (VN) flight traveling from Frankfurt (FRA) to Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) made an emergency landing at Istanbul (IST) after a 57-year-old passenger experienced severe medical symptoms.

Vietnam Airlines Emergency Landing in Istanbul

The medical issue began approximately one hour into flight VN30 when the 57-year-old Vietnamese man complained of unusual symptoms. Cabin crew issued a medical call, and three doctors onboard delivered first aid.

When his condition did not stabilize, the captain changed course and instructed a diversion. The flight diverted to Istanbul International Airport (IST). Upon arriving at Istanbul International Airport, medical personnel transferred him to a local hospital for further treatment, reported vnexpress.net.

After landing, the aircraft was serviced and refueled to comply with safety and operational protocols. Ground medical teams met the aircraft, and the patient was immediately taken to the hospital. The aircraft departed later that day.

Due to the diversion and emergency procedures, flight VN30 arrived in Ho Chi Minh City more than three hours later than scheduled. The delay resulted from medical requirements, refuelling, and ground clearances. All other passengers remained onboard until the flight resumed.

Vietnam Airlines’ similar incidents

Vietnam Airlines emphasized that passenger safety remains its highest priority. The carrier advised travelers to monitor their health before flying and consult a medical professional if they have pre-existing conditions.

The airline has made several recent emergency landings under similar circumstances.

Another earlier incident involved Flight VN37, which was approximately 8 hours into the 12-hour journey, when a 61-year-old Vietnamese male passenger experienced severe breathing difficulties and oxygen deficiency. This led to a diversion to a Turkish airport for a medical emergency.

Some of the earlier incidents related to the diversion of VN’s aircraft following a medical emergency include:

  • On June 16, flight VN158 from Da Nang to Hanoi diverted to Phu Bai Airport (HUI) in Hue to assist a female passenger who required urgent medical care.
  • On May 5, flight VN35 from Hanoi to Frankfurt made an emergency landing at Erzurum Airport (ERZ) in Turkey due to a passenger’s medical emergency.
  • On June 29, flight VN7569 departed Hanoi at 8:35 p.m. for Cam Ranh (CXR), but about 30 minutes after takeoff, a 37-year-old passenger, identified as N.V.D. and seated in 38B, showed signs of medical distress.

Bottom Line

Vietnam Airlines’ swift decision to divert flight VN30 highlights the importance of preparedness in handling in-flight medical crises.

By prioritizing passenger welfare over operational schedules, the airline demonstrated its commitment to safety and responsibility.

The incident also serves as a reminder for travelers to take proactive measures regarding their health before embarking on long-haul journeys.
