VietJet’s Growing Indian Network

The addition of flights to Bengaluru and Hyderabad further cements VietJet’s commitment to expanding its footprint in India. Right now, VietJet flies to four Indian cities.

VietJet already operates flights to Delhi and Mumbai from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The airline flies to Ahmedabad from three Vietnamese cities – Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang. The airline also flies to Kochi from Ho Chi Minh City.

VietJet also operated flights to Tiruchirappalli (TRZ) in Tamil Nadu for a brief period of time. However, the airline ended flights in this sector in March 2024. The airline reported low loads as the reason.

The diverse destinations served by the airline in India make VietJet a popular choice among Indian travelers looking for affordable options in Southeast Asia.

By adding these two new routes, VietJet is not only enhancing connectivity but also offering competitive fares and seamless travel options for South Indian passengers. The airline with its expanding network, positions itself well to capture a larger share of the India-Vietnam travel market.

With this, VietJet will further strengthen its status as the largest airline between India and Vietnam.

Boosting Regional Tourism

Vietnam has been gaining popularity among Indian tourists for its affordability and diverse offerings, ranging from the serene beaches of Da Nang to the bustling streets of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Bengaluru and Hyderabad were the major cities that lacked non-stop connectivity to Vietnam.

These non-stop flights will make it easier for travelers from these two cities to explore Vietnam’s attractions without layovers, thereby saving time and costs.

Vietnam is looking to attract more Indian visitors as part of its broader tourism strategy. With its visa-on-arrival policy for Indian citizens and its efforts to promote Indian cuisine and cultural events, Vietnam is becoming increasingly appealing to the Indian market.

VietJet Air also offers great onward connections to passengers. The airline has a robust network with 19 domestic and 32 international destinations.

VietJet sells Australian itineraries from all Indian cities with attractive fares. The airline also offers extra baggage allowance to those heading onward to Australia.

Bengaluru, Hyderabad flights Long delayed

This isn’t the first time that VietJet is willing to operate flights to Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The airline showed interest in these two cities in the past. The airline opened the bookings too.

In July 2022, VietJet announced flights to 3 three Indian cities from 3 Vietnamese cities. The airline announced plans to fly to Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang. The flights were to begin from September to October 2022.

While the flights to Ahmedabad started, the bookings on Hyderabad and Bengaluru – Vietnam flights were closed due to a lack of required approvals.

The problem lay in the bi-laterals. Vietnamese carriers were allowed to operate 28 weekly departures at max. The airline was allowed to fly from four of the metro cities mentioned in the Point of Call (PoC).

The airline was already operating 28 weekly departures from Delhi and Mumbai during that time. Ahmedabad comes under 18 points with an open-skies agreement. Hence, the flights to Ahmedabad did not face any disruptions.

The ministry recently amended bi-laterals. The allowed capacity increased by 14 weekly flights to 42 weekly departures. This has made it feasible for VietJet to finally start flights to Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

The Road Ahead

As VietJet forges ahead with its ambitious expansion in India, the direct flights to Bengaluru and Hyderabad represent a significant step in strengthening air links between India and Vietnam. This move will drive up passenger traffic, foster greater cultural exchange, and open up new avenues for tourism and business.

Vietnam Airlines (VN) recently said in a press release that they are looking at Bengaluru in South India as a potential destination. As the bi-laterals are now expanded from 24 flights weekly to 42 flights weekly, Vietnam Airlines will likely be the next airline to expand in India.

Vietnam Airlines will also increase its capacity in India with the introduction of wide-body aircraft. The airline will start operating A350-900s/B787-9s to Delhi and Mumbai to meet growing travel demands.

The new routes will undoubtedly make Vietnam a more accessible and attractive destination for travelers from South India, while also encouraging Vietnamese visitors to explore the rich culture and heritage of Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
