Similar Incidents

Last year on March 24, A United Airlines Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner executed an emergency landing at New York Stewart International Airport (SWF) following an encounter with “severe turbulence.” The incident resulted in injuries to more than 20 passengers, with seven requiring hospitalization.

The aircraft encountered strong winds while approaching Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), prompting the crew to abort the landing, climb several thousand feet, and divert to SWF instead.

Flight tracking data from Flightradar24.com shows the aircraft (registration N14016) operated as United flight UAL85 from Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport (TLV). The Boeing 787 pushed back at 11:30 but didn’t take off until 13:05. It initially cruised at 34,000 feet before climbing to 36,000 feet and later 38,000 feet while crossing the North Atlantic Ocean.

Approximately 10 hours and 50 minutes into what had been an otherwise routine flight, N14016 began its descent. Ten minutes later, at about 20,000 feet altitude, the aircraft flew over Albany and turned south. The descent rate slowed as it passed west of Poughkeepsie.

At 17:25 EDT, flying at approximately 4,200 feet, the Dreamliner veered north before turning east toward EWR. Five minutes later, it adjusted course to the southeast to align with the approach path. By 17:35, the aircraft was established on final approach to Runway 22L at EWR, descending through 3,000 feet.

The aircraft then climbed back to 4,200 feet before ultimately diverting and landing safely on Runway 27 at SWF around 18:00.

According to News 12 Westchester, 312 passengers were onboard, with fifteen receiving treatment from paramedics at SWF and seven transported to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital.

After a ground delay exceeding two hours, flight UAL85 eventually continued to its original destination, departing SWF at 20:16 and landing at EWR at 20:34.
