JetBlue Official Statement to CBS News:

The aircraft had most recently operated (as) Flight 1801 from New York’s JFK Airport.

The circumstances surrounding how they accessed the aircraft remain under investigation. This is a heartbreaking situation, and we are committed to working closely with authorities to support their efforts to understand how this occurred.”

Despite the ongoing probe, airport operations continue uninterrupted, Broward County Aviation Department spokesperson Arlene Satchell told CNN.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reports that wheel-well stowaways face a mortality rate exceeding 77%. These compartments create lethal conditions during flight, with temperatures plunging to -75 to -80°F at cruising altitude.

Individuals attempting such dangerous methods of travel face life-threatening risks, including crushing injuries, oxygen deprivation, and exposure to extreme freezing temperatures at cruising altitude.

Similar Incidents

A tragic discovery unfolded at Kahului Airport in Maui on December 24, 2024, when authorities found a deceased individual in the wheel well of United Airlines (UA) Flight UA202. The Boeing 787-10 aircraft had completed its scheduled journey from Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

United Airlines confirmed the discovery, noting that the wheel well area remains accessible only from the aircraft’s exterior. The incident has prompted immediate investigations by the Maui Police Department and local law enforcement agencies, with United Airlines providing full cooperation to determine how the individual breached airport security protocols.

This incident echoes a similar tragedy from December 5, 2022, when Sussex Metropolitan Police discovered an unidentified black male in the wheel bay of TUI Airways Flight BY225 at London’s Gatwick Airport.

The flight had originated from Banjul, Gambia, and the deceased carried no identification documents, complicating efforts to determine his identity, age, nationality, or intended destination.

There has been a rise in Stowaway incidents. Recently, a few passengers tried to travel without a ticket onboard the Delta Air Lines (DL) Flights.

A series of stowaway incidents disrupted Delta Air Lines operations, beginning with Svetlana Dali’s unauthorized journey from New York’s JFK Airport to Paris Charles de Gaulle. Federal authorities arrested the 57-year-old Russian-born US permanent resident on December 16, 2024, as she attempted to cross into Canada by bus.

Dali’s arrest follows her December 5th federal court appearance in Brooklyn, where she received an ankle monitor release following her initial stowaway incident on Delta Air Lines. Her attempted border crossing violated these release conditions.

Delta Air Lines encountered another security breach on Christmas Eve when an unticketed passenger infiltrated flight DL487, scheduled to depart from Seattle to Honolulu. Alert crew members detected the stowaway during taxi procedures, necessitating an immediate return to the terminal gate.
