In 2025, America’s busiest airports are once again proving just how vital domestic air travel remains to the nation’s economy and connectivity. From Chicago to Dallas, these megahubs form the backbone of U.S. aviation, linking big cities, small towns, and everything in between.

The latest ranking of the top 25 domestic airport megahubs highlights familiar names and some rising regional stars that are shaping the future of air travel across the United States (US) as flagged by OAG.

Big Three Still Rule

The top three airports in the 2025 domestic ranking are the same major players that have long dominated U.S. aviation: Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL), and Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW).

Chicago O’Hare International Airport holds the number one spot again this year. With United Airlines operating nearly half of its flights, O’Hare remains the country’s central crossroads.

Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport shares the top spot in overall passenger volume, and its dominance in domestic operations is unmatched. Nearly 80 percent of Atlanta’s flights are operated by Delta, making it one of the most concentrated airline hubs in the world.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, powered by American Airlines, ranks third. With 85 percent of its flights run by American, DFW continues to be the powerhouse of the central and southern United States.

The airport’s strategic location allows for efficient routing across the country, making it a major hub for both leisure and business travelers.

Across the Coasts

Beyond the top three, other major airports have also solidified their dominance within the U.S. domestic network. Denver International Airport (DEN) comes in fourth, showing consistent growth in United Airlines’ network.

With its vast runways and modern infrastructure, Denver has become one of the most efficient connecting hubs in the country.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), ranking fifth, reflects American Airlines’ strength in the Southeast. Over 88 percent of flights here are operated by American, making it one of the most airline-dependent hubs on the list.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) continues to rise as Alaska Airlines’ stronghold. With more than half of all flights operated by Alaska, SEA has become a model of how a regional carrier can build a powerful network.

Its West Coast position allows efficient access to destinations in both the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, as well as transcontinental routes.

Delta Network’s Deep Reach

Delta Air Lines shows an impressive presence across several airports in this ranking, with multiple strongholds beyond Atlanta.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) and Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) are key northern hubs for Delta, maintaining high levels of efficiency and reliability. Both airports have Delta operating over 70 percent of domestic flights, underlining the carrier’s deep regional reach.

Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is another major Delta center, ranking eleventh overall. Its new terminal expansion has made operations smoother and more passenger-friendly.

With 71 percent of flights belonging to Delta, Salt Lake City’s growing network now connects not only the Mountain West but also major national routes.

Boston Logan (BOS), New York LaGuardia (LGA), and JFK all play important roles in Delta’s East Coast network.

Boston continues to rise in importance, especially as Delta expands its Northeast operations. New York’s crowded airspace still offers fierce competition, but Delta’s consistency has kept both LGA and JFK firmly in the top 25.

The Power of American Airlines

American Airlines remains the most geographically widespread domestic carrier in the U.S., and that is reflected in the rankings. Besides DFW and Charlotte, American maintains strong hubs in Phoenix (PHX), Philadelphia (PHL), and Washington Reagan National (DCA).

Phoenix Sky Harbor continues to serve as a western anchor for American’s network, connecting travelers to California, the Pacific Northwest, and the Midwest.

Philadelphia, on the other hand, continues to link the Northeast with domestic and transatlantic routes.

Meanwhile, Washington’s Reagan National Airport remains essential for East Coast connectivity, serving business travelers moving between the capital and cities throughout the eastern seaboard.

Southwest Airlines’ Regional Strength

Southwest Airlines continues to thrive as the nation’s largest low-cost carrier, and several of its strongest domestic bases appear in this year’s top 25.

Chicago Midway (MDW), Dallas Love Field (DAL), Baltimore/Washington (BWI), and Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) all rank highly due to Southwest’s dominant presence.

Love Field stands out with Southwest operating an incredible 94 percent of all flights, while Midway maintains an 88 percent share.

Baltimore has become a key Northeast base for Southwest, connecting passengers to dozens of destinations at affordable fares.

Las Vegas, on the other hand, remains one of the most flexible and high-frequency airports in Southwest’s system, handling heavy tourist traffic while maintaining strong reliability.

United’s Wide Network and Westward Reach

United Airlines also remains a dominant player, with multiple megahubs across the country.

In addition to Chicago O’Hare and Denver, United controls much of the traffic through Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), where it handles about 80 percent of flights.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Washington Dulles (IAD) round out its top hubs, extending United’s reach to the Pacific and the nation’s capital.

Anchorage (ANC) is another airport on the list tied to United’s West Coast competition, though it’s Alaska Airlines that keeps it thriving domestically. Anchorage’s unique role as a gateway to Alaska’s communities gives it an outsized presence relative to its size.
