ZURICH- SWISS (LX) is preparing to debut its new Airbus A350-900s on long-haul flights, with Boston (BOS) selected as the first intercontinental destination. The airline confirmed that the inaugural service from Zurich (ZRH) will begin on November 20, 2025.

The A350s will replace SWISS’ aging Airbus A340-300 fleet, bringing advanced efficiency, reduced emissions, and the latest “SWISS Senses” cabin interiors. The delivery of the first aircraft is scheduled for October 2025, with initial short-haul crew familiarization flights within Europe.

SWISS Airbus A350s New Cabin

SWISS’ long-haul fleet currently includes Boeing 777-300ERs, Airbus A330-300s, and Airbus A340-300s.

The addition of Airbus A350-900s marks a significant modernization effort within the Lufthansa Group, which centralizes aircraft orders and allocates deliveries to member airlines.

According to OMAAT, SWISS is slated to receive 10 Airbus A350-900s, with the first five arriving between late 2025 and 2027, and the remaining five delivered by 2031.

The first group of aircraft will specifically replace the Airbus A340s, ensuring SWISS maintains a balanced fleet strategy with A330s and 777s serving alongside the new A350s.

The A350 offers improved fuel efficiency, extended range, and enhanced passenger comfort, making it a strong addition to the airline’s operations.

Initial Routes and Flights

The first SWISS Airbus A350-900 will arrive in October 2025. Before entering long-haul service, the aircraft will operate intra-European flights for crew training.

Destinations will include Zurich (ZRH) to Prague (PRG), with limited flights to Hannover (HAJ), Dusseldorf (DUS), and Palma de Mallorca (PMI).

Following this period, the aircraft will make its long-haul debut on the Zurich (ZRH) to Boston (BOS) route on November 20, 2025, several weeks earlier than initially scheduled.

Boston was chosen strategically since the daily roundtrip can be reliably operated with a single aircraft.

SWISS Senses Cabin Experience

The Airbus A350s will introduce the SWISS Senses cabin, a premium onboard experience aligned with Lufthansa Group’s new cabin designs. Key highlights include:

  • First Class: Three suites, including a unique center suite accommodating two passengers.
  • Business Class: 45 staggered seats with direct aisle access.
  • Premium Economy: 38 seats, the largest premium economy cabin in SWISS’ fleet.
  • Economy Class: 156 seats offering comfort-focused enhancements.

In total, each A350 will feature 242 seats across 4 classes. While SWISS has reduced its first-class seat count compared to current aircraft, it remains one of the few airlines offering first class on all long-haul flights.

Passenger Experience and Industry Impact

The A350-900’s introduction will elevate SWISS’ inflight product with modernized cabins, improved air quality, lower noise levels, and advanced seating options.

However, industry observers note two challenges: a reduction in first class capacity and a limited lavatory ratio in business class.

Despite these drawbacks, the aircraft’s premium-focused configuration positions SWISS competitively among European carriers.

SWISS will begin operating the Airbus A350-900 in October 2025, with its first intercontinental service between Zurich (ZRH) and Boston (BOS) launching on November 20, 2025.

These aircraft replace the Airbus A340-300s and introduce the SWISS Senses cabins, offering upgraded first, business, premium economy, and economy class products.

With 10 A350s scheduled for delivery through 2031, SWISS is modernizing its fleet for efficiency, sustainability, and passenger comfort.
