South American Airline Launching New Flights to Washington DC

7 godzin temu

BOLIVIA- Boliviana de Aviación (BoA), the national airline of Bolivia, is gearing up to launch a new long-haul service. The airline plans to connect Santa Cruz de la Sierra (VVI) to Washington D.C. in 2025. The airline plans to operate the route twice weekly. This marks a long-anticipated move to expand its presence in North America.

The specific launch dates and final route information are still to be confirmed. Based on BoA’s operational history, the flight may either be nonstop or include a stopover—possibly in Miami or Panama—as the airline has done with previous U.S.-bound services.

BoA’s interest in flying to Washington, D.C. dates back over a decade. Initial applications for service to the U.S. capital were made years ago, but the route never came to fruition—until now.

In 2025, the airline appears to be finally moving ahead with the long-held ambition. With groundwork reportedly underway, this new link will expand the airline’s route map. The route will foster closer ties between Bolivia and one of the world’s most influential cities.

There is a considerable number of Bolivians living in or near Washington. The route offers a convenient and direct connection to Bolivia.

It also opens up travel opportunities for U.S.-based businesspeople, diplomats, students, and tourists interested in Bolivia’s diverse culture, natural beauty, and growing economy.

BoA’s Growing Network and Fleet

Since its founding in 2007, BoA has grown to become Bolivia’s largest airline. The airline operates its main hub at Jorge Wilstermann International Airport in Cochabamba.

The airline now operates flights to major South American cities as well as intercontinental destinations such as Miami and Madrid. In August 2025, BoA is also set to launch flights to Barcelona, further strengthening its long-haul network.

The airline’s fleet includes Airbus A330-200s, Boeing 737s, and Bombardier CRJ-200s, with the A330s typically used for international long-haul routes.

These aircraft are equipped with lie-flat business class seats and modern amenities, including in-flight entertainment, offering passengers a competitive service on lengthy journeys.

Why Washington over others?

As the heart of U.S. politics and diplomacy, the city draws international traffic from across the globe. It’s also home to a growing number of Bolivians, particularly in the surrounding states.

In 2024, BoA carried over 4.29 million passengers, serving over 22 destinations, with top international markets including São Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Madrid. Of this, approximately 16.6% of Bolivia’s international travelers traveled between Bolivia and North America.

Meaning more than 360,000 people travelled to North America, making Washington a good choice for BoA’s next U.S. destination.

The Return fares between Santa Cruz or La Paz and Washington fall in the US$650–$800 range, with occasional deals nearing US$400–$500

Competition for BoA

BoA will have competition from other carriers such as Copa, Avianca, and United. These carriers already offer connecting services between the U.S. and Bolivia.

Furthermore, BoA has, at times, received mixed reviews from passengers regarding punctuality and customer service. The airline will need to improve these issues to win over North American travelers.

Nonetheless, BoA brings unique strengths to the table. The airline is known for its affordable fares, generous baggage allowances, and a family-friendly service model. Many of its long-haul flights allow passengers to check in up to three 25kg suitcases. This is a major draw for long-distance travelers.

With BoA’s typical long-haul setup, one can expect two-class service with a comfortable cabin layout. While many details are not yet known, the flights will likely be operated by A330s configured for international service.

Bottom Line

Boliviana de Aviación weathered a turbulent period during the pandemic, including major financial losses, but has emerged focused on growth and modernization.

The airline’s ongoing efforts to expand into strategic global markets are a promising sign not just for the carrier but for Bolivia’s aviation sector as a whole.
