SEATTLE- A suspected cyberattack struck Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) on Saturday (August 24, 2024), causing widespread disruptions and significant flight delays.

The Port of Seattle reported an “internet and web systems outage” early in the morning, prompting immediate action to isolate critical systems and investigate the cause.

Seattle Airport Cyberattack

Airport authorities swiftly identified the issue as a potential cybersecurity breach affecting the Port of Seattle’s infrastructure. In response, they initiated protocols to protect essential operations and began efforts to restore full service.

The impact on air travel proved substantial. By 8 pm Eastern Time, FlightAware data revealed 247 delayed flights and six cancellations at SEA. These numbers underscore the severity of the disruption and its ripple effect on travelers’ plans.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) officials have issued urgent advice to travelers in the wake of a suspected cyberattack. The airport emphasizes the need for passengers to stay informed and prepared as disruptions continue.

SEA strongly recommends that travelers obtain mobile boarding passes and complete baggage check procedures through airline apps before arriving at the airport. This proactive measure aims to streamline the check-in process and reduce congestion caused by system outages.

Airport authorities stress the importance of allowing extra time for all airport procedures. The ongoing technical issues may lead to longer wait times and unexpected delays throughout the facility.

Passengers are directed to consult their respective airlines for the most up-to-date flight information. SEA officials acknowledge that disruptions are likely to persist due to the unresolved system problems.

CrowdStrike Outage

Earlier this year in July, Microsoft encountered a severe global technical issue that paralyzed millions of Windows users worldwide. The problem manifested as the infamous “Blue Screen of Death” error, forcing affected computers to shut down or restart unexpectedly.

The root cause of the outage stemmed from a Crowdstrike software update for Microsoft Windows systems. This update inadvertently triggered a cascade of failures across various sectors, with the airline industry bearing the brunt of the disruption.

The impact on global air travel proved substantial. Cirium, a leading aviation analytics company, reported that by 6 a.m. ET on July 19, 1,390 flights had been canceled out of 110,000 scheduled worldwide. This figure underscores the magnitude of the disruption on a global scale.

Delta Air Lines (DL), a major international carrier, took the drastic step of pausing its entire global flight schedule in response to the technical difficulties. This decision highlighted the severity of the situation and its potential to cripple airline operations.

The ripple effects of the Microsoft outage reached far beyond North America. In India, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport reported significant technical problems, with six airlines experiencing operational difficulties. Jaipur International Airport confirmed that the outage had affected flights nationwide, indicating a widespread impact across the Indian subcontinent.

South Korea’s Incheon International Airport also faced disruptions, with carriers such as Air Premia and Easter Jet reporting operational issues. However, Korean Air remained unaffected due to its use of Amazon Web Services, demonstrating the importance of diverse IT infrastructure in mitigating such risks.
