TOULOUSE— A Ryanair (FR) flight from Bournemouth Airport (BOH) to Girona Airport (GRO) was forced to divert to Toulouse after a violent onboard incident on September 4, 2025.

The aircraft landed at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (TLS), where police removed a disruptive passenger who allegedly tried to open the emergency exit mid-flight.

Ryanair Flight Diverted to Toulouse

The trouble began shortly after takeoff when a male passenger reportedly attempted to open one of the aircraft’s emergency doors, shouting, “I want to go.” Other passengers intervened to stop him, sparking a physical altercation in the aisle.

Witnesses described scenes of panic, blood, and screaming as the man lashed out with punches, spat at fellow passengers, and even attempted to headbutt an elderly traveler.

Cabin crew and several passengers managed to restrain him using seatbelt extensions tied around his ankles. Despite efforts to calm the situation, the level of aggression forced the pilots to divert the flight to Toulouse, where French police boarded the aircraft.

Video footage shows officers carrying the handcuffed man off the plane before placing him on the tarmac under guard.

Passenger Accounts of the Incident

Eyewitnesses described the ordeal as traumatic. One passenger explained that the man initially emerged from the lavatory before rushing toward the emergency exits on both sides of the aircraft. “That’s when a huge brawl started with several people trying to pull him away from the doors,” the passenger said.

David Malone, another traveler onboard, recalled the chaos: “It went on for about 30 minutes. The man was completely out of control. It took three people to restrain him. There was blood everywhere, and people were crying. It was disgusting.” He also raised concerns about alcohol consumption at airports, questioning whether it contributed to the unruly behavior.

Airline Response and Policy on Unruly Behavior

Once the man was offloaded in Toulouse, the flight resumed its journey and eventually landed in Girona, arriving about two hours behind schedule.

Ryanair later confirmed the diversion and reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward disruptive passengers.

A spokesperson for the airline stated:

This flight from Bournemouth to Girona (4 Sept) was diverted to Toulouse after a passenger became disruptive onboard. Crew called ahead for police assistance, who met the aircraft upon landing at Toulouse Airport and offloaded this passenger before this flight continued to Girona. Ryanair has a strict zero tolerance policy towards passenger misconduct and will continue to take decisive action to combat unruly passenger behaviour.”

Similar Incident

Last month, A Ryanair flight bound for Agadir (AGA) was forced to return shortly after departure when a passenger allegedly tried to open an emergency exit mid-air.

The aircraft landed back at Manchester Airport (MAN), where Greater Manchester Police (GMP) boarded the plane and arrested the individual. Engineers inspected the Boeing 737-800 before the flight continued its journey on August 25, 2025.

Ryanair flight RK1266 departed from Manchester Airport (MAN) Terminal 3 at 9:20 a.m. local time, scheduled to arrive at Agadir-Al Massira Airport (AGA) in Morocco. Shortly after takeoff, a passenger reportedly attempted to tamper with one of the aircraft’s emergency exits.

According to witness accounts, nearby passengers quickly raised the alarm, alerting cabin crew to the disturbance. The individual was relocated from the emergency exit row, while the captain positioned himself near the affected door for the duration of the return leg.

Safe Diversion and Arrest

The Boeing 737-800 returned safely to Manchester, touching down at 10:09 a.m. after spending just over an hour in the air. Greater Manchester Police confirmed that officers boarded the aircraft on arrival and arrested a woman without further disruption.

Authorities have not yet released further details about the individual or any potential charges. Law enforcement is continuing its investigation.

Once the passenger was escorted off, Ryanair engineers carried out safety checks on the emergency exit door. Witnesses reported that minor fittings, including plastic covers, were replaced during the inspection. After being cleared as airworthy, the aircraft resumed its journey to Morocco.

Ryanair emphasized that passenger safety remained the airline’s top priority and confirmed that all protocols were followed during the incident.

Bottom Line

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about disruptive behavior on commercial flights, particularly related to alcohol consumption before boarding.

Industry experts have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of rules to protect both passengers and crew from situations that can escalate quickly in the confined space of an aircraft.

While rare, such incidents serve as reminders of the risks posed by aggressive behavior at 35,000 feet and the importance of crew training and swift interventions to ensure passenger safety.
