Qatar Airways Passenger Sues Crew for Stealing $600 on San Francisco-Doha Flight

SAN FRANCISCO- A passenger on Qatar Airways (QR) flight from San Francisco (SFO) to Kolkata via Doha (DOH) has filed a lawsuit alleging a flight attendant stole $600 from her designer handbag while she slept in her QSuite Business Class seat.

The incident occurred on February 26, 2025, during Qatar Airways flight QR738, a 15-hour journey from San Francisco (SFO) to Doha (DOH) aboard an Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, where the passenger reportedly boarded with $4,100 in cash.

The lawsuit, filed in a California district court, details how the passenger, who has requested anonymity, discovered her handbag missing after waking from sleep.

Upon searching the aircraft, she allegedly found her bag on the lavatory floor alongside a Qatar Airways flight attendant. A subsequent check revealed $600 missing from an envelope containing dollar bills, PYOK reported.

Despite immediately reporting the incident to senior crew members, the passenger claims no immediate action was taken, and the suspected flight attendant continued working for the remainder of the flight.

The legal complaint further alleges that after arriving in Kolkata, the situation escalated when the passenger began receiving threatening messages on social media platforms from individuals claiming to know the flight attendant.

The lawsuit accuses Qatar Airways of several failures, including inadequate response to the theft allegation, failure to protect the passenger’s identity, and lack of compensation for the stolen funds.

Specific charges include breach of contract, negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and intentional tort.

This incident highlights security vulnerabilities even in premium cabin settings. While passengers often consider Business Class accommodations like Qatar’s QSuite as secure environments, valuable items left unattended remain susceptible to theft.

Notably, Qatar Airways’ newest QSuite Next Gen design features a lockable storage drawer specifically to address passenger security concerns.

Allegations Raise Questions About Security

In-flight theft occurs more frequently than many travelers realize, though perpetrators typically include other passengers rather than airline staff. Organized “theft rings” sometimes specifically book flights to target fellow travelers’ belongings.

Several aspects of this particular claim appear questionable. Qatar and other Gulf nations maintain extremely low theft rates due to severe consequences for such crimes. The scenario described—a flight attendant entering a suite, taking a purse, and then being discovered in an unlocked lavatory with the stolen item—presents an implausibly risky approach for airline staff.

The lawsuit further alleges the passenger received threatening social media messages after the flight. This raises additional questions about information security and employee conduct. If the flight attendant shared passenger information with outside contacts who then made threats, this would constitute a serious privacy violation, OMAAT flagged.

However, the logical consistency of these claims remains problematic. If the airline dismissed the incident as claimed, the accused flight attendant would presumably have little motivation to orchestrate harassment against the passenger.

Regarding Qatar Airways’ investigation, limited information makes assessment difficult. Standard protocol would require the cabin manager to file an incident report, triggering an internal review. The passenger’s dissatisfaction with the outcome may reflect either inadequate investigation or simply conclusions that differed from the passenger’s expectations.

The lawsuit’s filing indicates some level of commitment to these claims, distinguishing them from casual social media allegations. However, the unusual circumstances described warrant careful scrutiny as the legal process unfolds.
