Qantas Resumes A380 Flights from Sydney to This City After 5 Years Hiatus

2 godzin temu

SYDNEY- Qantas (QF) has resumed its Airbus A380 flights from Sydney (SYD) to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) after a gap of more than 5 years. The Texas airport once again sees A380 service, filling the void left by British Airways (BA), which ceased its superjumbo operations there in March 2025.

This reinstated route marks the return of one of the world’s longest nonstop A380 flights, connecting two major oneworld hubs and strengthening Qantas’ transpacific network through its close partnership with American Airlines (AA).

Qantas Resumes Sydney to Dallas Flight

Qantas first introduced the A380 on the Sydney to Dallas route in September 2014, replacing its Boeing 747-400 fleet.

The service continued until April 2020, when operations paused during the pandemic. Now, the carrier operates four weekly A380 flights, with the Boeing 787-9 covering the remaining three days.

From January 2026, the route will transition to a full seven-day A380 schedule, matching peak summer travel in Australia.

The A380 deployed to Dallas features 485 seats, divided into 14 first-class suites, 70 business class seats, 60 premium economy seats, and 341 economy seats. On August 11, the 14.4-year-old VH-OQK operated the service, according to Flightradar24 data.

Ch-aviation reports that Qantas currently has ten A380s in its fleet, though not all are active. Reported by Simple Flying, this aircraft was the 63rd A380 ever built and is Qantas’ second youngest example.

Second Longest Nonstop A380 Route

Covering 7,474 nautical miles (13,805 km) each way, Sydney–Dallas is Qantas’ longest nonstop A380 flight and the second longest worldwide for the aircraft type.

The block time can reach up to 17 hours and 15 minutes, just 10 minutes shorter than Emirates’ Dubai–Auckland service, the current record holder.

Flight schedules in August show:

  • QF7 (Sydney – Dallas): Departs 12:10, arrives 12:30 same day (15h 20m)
  • QF8 (Dallas – Sydney): Departs 22:40, arrives 06:55+2 (17h 15m)

Passenger Traffic and Connectivity

Between April 2024 and March 2025, Qantas carried nearly 140,000 round-trip passengers on this route, with an 86% average seat load factor five points higher than pre-pandemic levels.

This was achieved primarily with the 787-9, suggesting the A380’s reintroduction could further boost revenue per flight.

US Department of Transportation data indicates that approximately 75% of passengers used connecting flights, most commonly via American Airlines.

The top onward destinations from Dallas were New York City, Orlando, Washington DC, Toronto, and Chicago.

Passenger distribution over the same period:

Category Passengers % of Total
Sydney origin, connected via Dallas 66,000 47%
Connecting via both Sydney & Dallas 38,000 27%
Dallas origin, connected via Sydney 19,000 14%
Nonstop only 17,000 12%
