Subsequent investigation on January 21, 2025, revealed the source of the incident: a blanket contaminated with an unidentified fluid during the flight. Qantas officials confirmed they were unable to definitively identify the specific fluid responsible for the contamination.

The aircraft involved in the incident is Airbus A330-200, registered as VH-EBK. Further, it is a 16.6-year-old aircraft powered by two GE CF6-80E1A4/B engines.

The aircraft remained grounded in Cairns for 21 hours before resuming its journey to Manila. The delayed flight ultimately reached its destination approximately 23 hours behind the original schedule, significantly impacting passenger travel plans.
