MUMBAI- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai (BOM) proudly announces the outstanding achievements of its cargo operations during the fiscal year 2023-2024, further solidifying its position as a leading global cargo hub.

With connectivity to over 700 cargo destinations this fiscal year, CSMIA experienced a notable 6% year-on-year increase in overall cargo volumes, representing a significant step forward in economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mumbai Airport Cargo Performance

The growth is primarily driven by an impressive 10% surge in international cargo volumes. Notably, these volumes reached an impressive 93% recovery compared to their pre-COVID levels, indicating a robust resurgence in global trade and logistics activities.

This fiscal year witnessed a 20% increase in the total number of Cargo Air Traffic Movements (ATMs). This accomplishment underscores the airport’s commitment to efficiently and flexibly managing the rapidly growing cargo volumes.

Mumbai Airport’s cargo facility oversees a diverse range of goods, with pharmaceuticals, agricultural products, and automobiles among the primary categories.

The top three transported categories are automobiles, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural cargo on the international front.

Domestically, the leading cargo categories include General cargo, engineering goods, and post office (PO) mail. These categories highlight the airport’s expertise in handling various goods.

The surge in e-commerce significantly impacted cargo operations at Mumbai Airport. During the festive season of Diwali, there was a notable 87% year-on-year growth in e-commerce shipments. There was also a considerable increase in demand for perishable items, with mango exports being particularly prominent from April to July 2023, along with exports of seasonal cut flowers and chocolates during Valentine’s Day.

In a groundbreaking achievement, CSMIA successfully managed its inaugural shipment of frozen ready-to-serve food products, such as Idli and Vada, using specialized va-Q-tec containers bound for Amsterdam.

International Cargo: Top Airlines and Destinations

CSMIA’s international cargo volumes comprised 56% exports and 44% imports.

London, Frankfurt, Dubai, Chicago, and Amsterdam emerged as the top global destinations for outgoing cargo, while Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad led domestically.

Leading international carriers handling cargo volumes from CSMIA included Emirates, Qatar, and Cathay Pacific, alongside domestic carriers like IndiGo, Vistara, and Akasa Air. This solidifies the airport’s strategic position as a key facilitator in both international and domestic airfreight operations.

Enhancements in Operations

To bolster infrastructure and embrace advanced technology, MIAL is currently constructing PEB (Pre-Engineered Building Structure) to expand its import cargo handling capacity. Moreover, CSMIA has spearheaded innovations in cargo operations, notably introducing the Air Cargo Community System, Adani MIAL Air Exchange (AMAX), the first of its kind in India. This system revolutionizes processes through standardized operating procedures (SOPs), integrated systems, and digitization.

Mobile apps like AMAX and Turant enable transparent, paperless, and digital operations, eliminating physical documentation for export consignments. Integrated processes such as E-Airwaybill, e-carting orders, e-CSD, e-delivery orders, and e-gate passes ensure operational efficiency.

Additionally, CSMIA has pioneered the Air Cargo Community portal in India, enhancing operational efficiency and supply chain planning. The introduction of Digital Docket Delivery (D-Cube) for the import gate pass system further streamlines online processing, reducing paper usage and cargo dwell time.

Mumbai Airport embodies excellence in the global cargo industry, exemplifying unwavering dedication to efficiency, innovation, and sustainability. As it progresses, Mumbai Airport remains steadfast in its commitment to spearheading innovations, facilitating seamless operations, and addressing evolving global needs.
