Lord David Lipsey found dead after swimming in River Wye

Labour peer Lord David Lipsey has been found dead after swimming in the River Wye, police have confirmed. Dyfed Powys Police said the body of a man recovered from the water in Glasbury on July 1 was that of Lord Lipsey.

The politician and former journalist had entered the House of Lords in 1999 after a distinguished career in journalism and politics. He previously served as a Downing Street adviser under then prime minister Jim Callaghan.

Multi-agency search operation

Police received a report concerning the safety of a man who was last seen swimming in the River Wye at Glasbury. A multi-agency search operation was launched on July 1, involving multiple emergency services.

"Following a multi-agency search on July 1, sadly, we can confirm the body of Lord David Lipsey was recovered," a police spokesperson said. Officers confirmed that Lord Lipsey's next of kin have been informed of his death.

Family requests privacy

The family have asked for their privacy to be respected during this difficult time. "Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time," the police spokesperson added.

The Lord Speaker has issued a statement on behalf of the House of Lords following news of Lord Lipsey's death. The upper chamber extended its "condolences to the noble Lord's family and friends" in recognition of his service to Parliament.
