MILAN- Milan’s air traffic landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with Linate Airport (LIN) steadily overshadowing Malpensa (MXP).
The recent expansion of the M4 metro line has enhanced Linate’s accessibility, further solidifying its status as the preferred choice for travelers.
Amid these shifts, KLM (KL) has announced its complete withdrawal from Malpensa Airport (MXP), moves its Milan operations to Linate (LIN).
Effective March 30, 2025, all KLM flights to Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) will depart exclusively from Linate, reinforcing the airport’s growing dominance.

KLM Moves from Malpensa to Linate
The Dutch carrier, KLM’s decision to exit Malpensa aligns with broader trends in Milan’s aviation sector. Linate’s increasing connectivity and passenger preference have contributed to this strategic shift.
Although Malpensa offers a direct train link to Cadorna and Centrale stations, many travelers find Linate’s urban proximity and metro access more convenient.
KLM will operate five daily flights from Linate to Amsterdam Schiphol at the following times:
06:40 | Linate to Amsterdam | Linate (LIN) | Schiphol (AMS) |
11:00 | Linate to Amsterdam | Linate (LIN) | Schiphol (AMS) |
13:00 | Linate to Amsterdam | Linate (LIN) | Schiphol (AMS) |
16:50 | Linate to Amsterdam | Linate (LIN) | Schiphol (AMS) |
19:40 | Linate to Amsterdam | Linate (LIN) | Schiphol (AMS) |
This restructuring allows KLM to streamline its operations while maximizing efficiency at a single Milan airport.

ITA Airways-Lufthansa Merger
KLM’s move is also tied to the competitive restructuring triggered by the ITA Airways (AZ) -Lufthansa (LH) merger.
Under European Competition Commission directives, ITA and Lufthansa were required to release 15 slots at Linate to foster competition. The beneficiaries of these slots include:
- EasyJet (U2): Granted five slot pairs for routes to Brussels, Frankfurt, and Vienna.
- Air France/KLM (AF): Awarded two slot pairs, allowing KLM to transfer its final Malpensa flight to Linate.
According to Tornos News, this reallocation strengthens Linate’s status as Milan’s primary international gateway and aligns with evolving airline strategies.
Unlike KLM, Air France (AF) will continue to serve both Malpensa and Linate airports.
The airline is set to expand its Milan-Paris (Charles de Gaulle) services, increasing daily flights from nine to ten.
A new midday departure from Linate at 12:20 will be added, reinforcing Air France’s commitment to dual-airport operations in Milan.

Bottom Line
KLM’s withdrawal from Malpensa underscores the ongoing shift of air traffic toward Linate, driven by enhanced connectivity and airline strategy adjustments.
The reallocation of slots fosters competition, reshaping Milan’s aviation landscape. As airlines realign their operations, Linate emerges as the city’s dominant international hub.
