MIAMI- New York-based carrier JetBlue Airways (B6) actively pursues new airline partnerships, demonstrating its willingness to increase investment to secure a strategic alliance.
The carrier’s determination follows the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’ November decision to block its Northeast Alliance with American Airlines (AA).

JetBlue Alliance Talks
JetBlue President Martin St. George emphasized the value of partnerships during his address at the Barclays Industrial Select Conference in Miami. The executive highlighted how strategic alliances enhance customer loyalty programs, addressing a key competitive disadvantage for the airline.
St. George reinforced JetBlue’s commitment to partnership exploration, stating the company would execute deals that deliver financial benefits. His remarks included support for maintaining the original structure of the Northeast Alliance, despite legal challenges.
The Biden Administration’s Justice Department successfully argued that the American Airlines partnership reduced market competition. Officials contended that the alliance removed American Airlines’ incentive to compete with JetBlue on pricing, potentially harming consumers who historically benefited from JetBlue’s competitive rates.
JetBlue’s strategic JetForward initiative allocates specific funding for partnership development. St. George indicated flexibility in adjusting these financial commitments, suggesting the potential involvement of external financing.
The comprehensive JetForward plan targets operational improvements across reliability, network expansion, and product enhancement, projecting incremental earnings before interest and taxes of $800 million to $900 million through 2027.

Can it be Southwest Airlines?
Southwest Airlines (WN) faces intensifying merger speculation following revelations from flight attendants union board member Chris Click after a recent executive board meeting. His social media communications sparked discussions about potential acquisition targets, with Click personally endorsing Breeze Airways while poll respondents favored JetBlue.
The connection to Breeze Airways runs deeper through its founder David Neeleman’s historical transaction with Southwest, where he previously sold Morris Air before establishing JetBlue. This background adds context to current speculation about Southwest’s acquisition strategy.
Union leadership has consistently signaled merger possibilities over the past nine months. Click’s latest announcement promises forthcoming communications and a scheduled live session on February 18, alongside training initiatives in Oklahoma City.
The airline’s pilot union prepared for potential acquisition scenarios by securing legal representation last year. Initial discussions centered on JetBlue as a target, particularly given investor Carl Icahn’s potential influence on the struggling carrier. However, regulatory concerns under the Biden administration and fleet compatibility issues diminished these prospects.
Southwest’s recent financial decisions reflect significant operational shifts. The carrier has sold aircraft and increased debt to fund stock buybacks while implementing major changes including assigned seating systems and premium cabin configurations. These transitions, combined with Elliott Capital’s board influence, suggest reduced likelihood of immediate acquisition moves.
The carrier’s acquisition history demonstrates a pattern of targeting smaller competitors. Notable examples include the strategic absorption of Muse Air to eliminate competition, the Morris Air acquisition, procurement of American Trans Air assets during bankruptcy, and the successful AirTran acquisition following an unsuccessful bid for Frontier.
