IndiGo Plans Strong Mumbai Hub For New Europe Flights

5 godzin temu

MUMBAI- India’s Largest LCC, IndiGo Airlines (6E), is launching a major international connectivity expansion, linking over 50 domestic cities to Europe through Mumbai (BOM). The airline will enable seamless travel to Amsterdam (AMS) and Manchester (MAN) via its growing western hub.

Passengers from tier-2 and tier-3 Indian cities will benefit from streamlined one-stop connections, short layovers, and single-ticket check-ins, positioning IndiGo for stronger global play, Hindu BusinessLine reported.

IndiGo Europe Flights via Mumbai

IndiGo is using Mumbai (BOM) as a strategic regional hub to connect smaller Indian cities to European destinations such as Amsterdam (AMS) and Manchester (MAN). This model mimics its previous success in Kolkata, where domestic feeder flights connected to international services to Vietnam.

Passengers can expect layovers of under five hours, which significantly improves the appeal of these long-haul routes. By enabling through check-in for luggage and providing a single ticket journey, IndiGo reduces friction and complexity for travelers heading to Europe.

This strategy not only facilitates international travel from underserved Indian markets but also addresses geopolitical constraints.

By consolidating flights in Mumbai, IndiGo avoids routing through Pakistani airspace and conflict-prone West Asia regions, ensuring more consistent scheduling and safety.

Building Int’l Reach Through Metro Hubs

The expansion is part of IndiGo’s broader plan to develop metro-based aviation hubs across Mumbai, Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR), and Hyderabad (HYD). These hubs are designed to provide robust one-stop international connectivity to passengers outside the major metros.

With more than 65% of the global population within a 5–6-hour flying radius of India, CEO Pieter Elbers emphasized the strategic advantage of India’s location.

According to Elbers, Mumbai will become a key point for West Asia-bound flights, while Delhi will focus on Central Asia.

The airline’s ultimate goal is to become a self-reliant global connector, leveraging India’s geography to enhance outbound and inbound connectivity without overdependence on foreign carriers.

New Destinations and Global Partnerships

In FY 2025, IndiGo plans to add direct flights to 10 new international destinations, including:

  • London (LHR)
  • Athens (ATH)
  • Copenhagen (CPH)
  • Amsterdam (AMS)
  • Manchester (MAN)
  • Cambodia
  • Four cities in the CIS region

To enhance connectivity beyond its own network, IndiGo has signed codeshare agreements with Air France-KLM (AF/KL), Delta Air Lines (DL), and Virgin Atlantic (VS). These partnerships open up access to over 30 cities across Europe and the US.

This joint strategy positions IndiGo, Delta, and their European partners to effectively compete with Air India (AI) and Emirates (EK) on critical India-Europe and India-US routes, improving travel options and pricing for Indian passengers.
