NAVI MUMBAI- India’s largest LCC, IndiGo Airlines (6E) advanced its preparations for flight operations at Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) as 40 team members, including pilots, engineers, and cabin crew, completed orientation sessions on January 17, 2025.
Navi Mumbai International Airport has established a three-phase operational launch schedule, beginning with its inauguration on April 17, 2025. The airport will commence domestic flights and cargo operations on May 15, 2025, followed by international services in July 2025.

The team conducted comprehensive inspections of the runway and airside facilities during their guided tour.
This orientation follows IndiGo’s historic first test flight to NMIA on December 29, 2024. The test flight utilized an 11.7-year-old Airbus A320 aircraft (VT-IFN) equipped with IAE engines, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s development.
Captains Karan Sahgal and Rahul Jain piloted the inaugural flight from Mumbai Airport (BOM), departing at 12:28 PM. The aircraft conducted multiple calibration tests, executing low approaches over the runway before completing its landing at Navi Mumbai at 1:38 PM IST.
The operation represents IndiGo’s strategic expansion as India’s largest domestic carrier prepares to integrate NMIA into its network.
The successful test flight and subsequent team orientation demonstrate the airline’s commitment to establishing comprehensive operations at Mumbai’s second international airport.

Operations to Start this Year
Initial airline operations at NMIA point toward IndiGo Airlines and Akasa Air (QP) as the first carriers to establish services at Mumbai’s second international airport. Air India (AI) plans to integrate the facility into its network in subsequent phases of operation.
IndiGo Airlines has achieved a significant technical milestone by completing simulator validation for Draft RNP approaches at Navi Mumbai International Airport. The validation process received approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) developed the approach procedures.

he facility will initiate operations using its southern runway, designated as 08/26, with a capacity for 50 aircraft movements. Terminal 1 will process 20 million passengers annually, marking a substantial addition to Mumbai’s aviation infrastructure.
NMIA occupies 1,160 hectares, with construction commencing in August 2021 following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foundation stone ceremony on February 18, 2018. The airport represents AAHL’s ninth aviation facility in India, expanding its portfolio of managed airports.
Bansal disclosed ongoing negotiations with Indian carriers for both domestic and international services.
The development timeline extends to Terminal 2, with design work underway and construction scheduled to begin in mid-2025, following the airport’s operational launch.
