MADRID Iberia Airlines (IB) will make aviation history with the first-ever westbound transatlantic redeye flight from Europe to the United States (US).

Operated on an Airbus A330, this service will commence on October 28 between Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).

Iberia RedEye Flight to the US

The unprecedented schedule features a 12:55 a.m. departure from Madrid, arriving in Dallas at 5:30 a.m. local time, marking a significant shift from traditional transatlantic flight patterns. This service will initially operate four times weekly during winter before expanding to daily flights for the summer schedule.

While eastbound overnight flights from the US to Europe have long been standard practice, westbound redeye flights from Europe to America have been notably absent from airline schedules until now.

Iberia’s innovative approach with flight IB363 transforms this convention by departing Madrid just before 1:00 a.m. and landing in Dallas before sunrise.

This scheduling creates new possibilities for travelers with European connections into Madrid, offering seamless transfers to early morning arrivals in Dallas with potential onward connections.

The return flight, IB364, maintains a more traditional schedule, departing Dallas at 1:55 p.m. and arriving in Madrid at 6:15 a.m. the following day.

The timing particularly benefits travelers originating from other European cities who can connect through Madrid’s hub in the evening and continue their journey overnight, maximizing daytime hours upon arrival in the United States.

Business travelers can potentially attend morning meetings in Dallas without losing a business day to travel.

Practical Considerations for Passengers

For travelers based in Madrid, the schedule presents unique logistical challenges. With a departure just before 1:00 a.m., passengers face a significant gap between typical hotel checkout times and flight departure. This unusual timing might necessitate an extra night’s accommodation for many travelers, offsetting the potential benefit of saving a hotel night at the destination.

The flight’s viability will depend heavily on connecting traffic rather than origin-destination passengers. Those continuing beyond Dallas to other American destinations may find particular value in early morning arrival times that enable same-day connections throughout the US.

Iberia’s business class offering on the A330 becomes especially relevant for this overnight service, as passengers will want to maximize sleep during the approximately 10-hour flight. The airline’s current business class features lie-flat beds that will be essential for this unique overnight westbound crossing.

Market Response and Future Outlook

The industry will be watching this pioneering schedule closely to assess passenger reception and commercial viability. Its success could potentially influence other European carriers to consider similar westbound overnight services to the United States, particularly on routes where connection opportunities would benefit from early morning arrivals.

If the service proves popular, it may establish a new paradigm for transatlantic travel scheduling beyond the traditional model. Iberia has currently scheduled this timetable through the winter 2025-2026 season, suggesting a significant commitment to testing this innovative approach.

The experiment represents Iberia’s willingness to challenge conventional scheduling wisdom and differentiate its offering in the competitive transatlantic market. Success would likely lead to continuation and possible expansion for the winter 2026-2027 season and beyond.
