Iberia Flight IB-311 Safe Return

At the time of the turnaround, the aircraft was approximately 580 nautical miles west-northwest of Santa Maria (SMA) in the Azores Islands, Portugal.

The pilots of Iberia Airlines (IB) Flight IB311, executed a safe return journey, landing the aircraft on Madrid’s runway 18R approximately 3 hours after initiating the return protocol.

A passenger later reported that the captain had announced a technical problem during the flight.

Another passenger revealed that following the completion of the flight, information emerged that the crew had suspected a fuel leak, which necessitated the emergency return.

The aircraft returned to service approximately 13 hours after landing in Madrid (MAD), suggesting that maintenance crews were able to address the issue relatively quickly.

Similar Incidents

A United Airlines flight from London Heathrow to Newark Liberty International Airport executed an emergency turnaround on November 9, 2024, after declaring an in-flight emergency.

Flight UAL17 (also known as UA17) returned to London reportedly due to a suspected fuel leak, according to information shared by a user on social media platform X. These reports remain unconfirmed by official sources.

This incident follows similar fuel-related emergencies in recent aviation history. In August 2024, a Garuda Indonesia Boeing 737 aborted its takeoff at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after crew detected a fuel leak.

Last year, an American Airlines Boeing 737 flying from Chicago O’Hare to New York’s LaGuardia was forced to make an emergency landing at Kalamazoo Battle Creek International Airport when the aircraft experienced a mid-air fuel leak.

History of Iberia Airlines Incidents

Iberia Airlines (IB), Spain’s flag carrier, has maintained a generally strong safety record throughout its operations, though it has experienced several notable incidents over its long history.

Historically, Iberia’s most significant accident occurred in 1985 when an Iberia Boeing 727 crashed into a mountain near Bilbao, Spain (BIO), resulting in 148 fatalities. The crash was attributed to navigational errors during approach in poor weather conditions.

In February 2019, an Iberia A330 operating from Madrid (MAD) to New York (NYC) encountered severe turbulence over the North Atlantic, resulting in injuries to seven passengers and three crew members. The aircraft diverted to Boston (BOS) where the injured received medical attention.

A more serious incident occurred in December 2021 when an Iberia A320 operating from Madrid (MAD) to Barcelona (BCN) suffered a hydraulic system failure shortly after takeoff. The crew executed an emergency landing back at Madrid (MAD) with no injuries reported, though the aircraft sustained substantial damage.

In September 2023, an Iberia Express A320 experienced a tail strike during landing at Madrid Barajas airport. The incident resulted in minor damage to the aircraft but no injuries to passengers or crew.

The airline has since implemented comprehensive safety measures and training protocols, resulting in a marked improvement in its safety record.
