BEJA- The upcoming startup carrier, Global Airlines marked a significant milestone as its first Airbus A380 touched down in Beja, Portugal, on January 16, 2025, following extensive maintenance operations in Dresden, Germany. The superjumbo’s arrival represents a crucial step in the UK startup’s ambitious aviation plans.

The aircraft, previously operated by China Southern Airlines (CZ), underwent comprehensive servicing at EFW’s facility since October 2023. The transformation included a distinctive partial livery application, featuring Global Airlines’ corporate branding while retaining elements of its former operator’s design scheme.

Global Airlines A380 Portugal Landing

The journey to Beja carries strategic importance as the Portuguese facility serves as Hi Fly’s primary flight testing center. Hi Fly, the wet-lease operator managing the aircraft for Global Airlines, continues to play a pivotal role in the A380’s operational development.

This landing marks only the second time an A380 has graced Portuguese soil. The first occurrence dates back to 2018 when Hi Fly’s own A380, bearing registration 9H-MIP, arrived showcasing the Mirpuri Foundation’s “Save the Coral Reefs” environmental campaign.

Aviation enthusiasts gathered in substantial numbers at Beja Airport to witness this historic arrival.

The aircraft’s journey began at Prestwick, Scotland, where it underwent initial maintenance before its comprehensive overhaul in Dresden.

Hi Fly Operated the A380

Hi Fly successfully transported Global Airlines’ inaugural Airbus A380-841, registered as 9H-GLOBL from Dresden to Beja, completing a 2,237 KM (1,390 nautical mile) journey.

Hi Fly Group Vice-Chairman Commander Carlos Mirpuri piloted the three-hour flight, adding to his previous missions with the aircraft from Mojave Desert Airport to Prestwick and subsequently to Dresden in 2023.

Commander Mirpuri shared his technical assessment of the A380, emphasizing its advanced technology and remarkable maneuverability despite its size. He highlighted the aircraft’s responsiveness, comparing its handling characteristics to smaller Airbus models.

The commander expressed anticipation for the aircraft’s upcoming commercial operations with Global Airlines.

The delivery flight represents the culmination of a two-year collaborative effort between Hi Fly and Global Airlines teams. Hi Fly’s involvement brings significant expertise, as the company stands among only 15 airlines worldwide to have operated the A380. Their selection for this project stems from their demonstrated technical capabilities in reactivating preserved A380s from Mojave Desert Airport.

Global Airlines’ Founder & CEO James Asquith confirmed this flight as the fifth operation in the company’s development. He emphasized the strategic partnership with Hi Fly’s experienced crew, aligning with Global Airlines’ commitment to operational excellence.

Asquith indicated plans for expanded flight operations throughout 2025, signaling continued collaboration between Global Airlines and Hi Fly for worldwide operations.

The successful transfer marks a significant milestone in Global Airlines’ expansion strategy, positioning the company for its planned entry into commercial A380 operations. Hi Fly’s involvement provides crucial operational expertise and technical support for the ambitious project of returning stored A380s to active service.
