Fiji Airways Cuts Amenity Kits in Business Class for Sustainability

SUVA- Fiji Airways (FJ) is making a notable change to its premium cabin service by removing traditional business class amenity kits. The airline, based at Nadi International Airport (NAN), says the move reflects a shift toward sustainability and cost efficiency.

Instead of pre-packed kits, passengers will now be offered individual essentials from a tray during the flight. While this decision challenges expectations, the airline believes it reduces waste and provides flexibility without compromising passenger comfort.

Fiji Airways Cuts Business Class Amenity Kits

Fiji Airways has earned recognition in recent years for balancing service quality with smart business decisions.

Compared to other island-based national carriers such as Air Tahiti Nui (TN), Air Mauritius (MK), and Air Seychelles (HM), Fiji Airways has maintained profitability while still delivering a well-regarded travel experience.

The latest decision to end the distribution of amenity kits in business class highlights this practical approach.

Outgoing CEO Andre Viljoen explained that years of observation showed many passengers either left the kits unopened or only used one or two items. This resulted in significant waste and unnecessary expense.

Reported by OMAAT, Viljoen described the change as a way to “differentiate and offer something better.”

Now, instead of a sealed pouch, cabin crew will walk through the cabin offering core items individually. Travelers can choose from products like moisturizers, eye shades, socks, or lip balm, ensuring resources are used only by those who want them.

Balancing Expectations with Sustainability

Amenity kits have long been seen as a hallmark of business class travel. Some passengers enjoy keeping them as souvenirs, while others appreciate the convenience of having pre-packed items during the flight.

Airlines often value them as subtle brand reminders once customers reuse the pouches at home.

However, the reality is that many kits are discarded after the flight, contributing to environmental waste. By shifting to a selective distribution model, Fiji Airways aims to reduce its environmental footprint and redirect spending toward other aspects of the customer experience.

This approach acknowledges passenger expectations but redefines luxury as practicality paired with choice.

Passenger Reactions

This move goes against a broader trend in premium air travel, where many carriers continue to invest heavily in branded amenity kits.

Competitors often collaborate with luxury brands to create collectible pouches, viewing them as part of the aspirational image of business class.

Fiji Airways, however, prioritizes efficiency and customer-focused service over branding extras. For frequent flyers, the change may be welcomed as a step toward sustainability.

For others, particularly those who enjoy collecting amenity kits, the absence might feel like a downgrade.

The long-term perception will likely depend on how well the airline delivers in other areas of the business class experience, such as food, comfort, and in-flight service.

Bottom Line

Fiji Airways (FJ) is eliminating amenity kits in business class on flights from Nadi International Airport (NAN).

The airline’s leadership believes most kits are wasted, and that a tray service with essential items is a smarter alternative.

While the decision may surprise travelers used to the tradition, it reflects a growing focus on reducing waste and optimizing resources in the aviation industry.
