Delta Los Angeles to Melbourne Flight

Delta Air Lines (DL) will launch a new nonstop service between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Melbourne Airport (MEL), operating three times per week, using Airbus A350.

This expansion will add approximately 86,000 additional seats annually, providing travelers with greater accessibility and competitive pricing on international flights.

Delta’s new service will operate on the following schedule:

Departure Arrival Departure Time Arrival Time Frequency
Los Angeles (LAX) Melbourne (MEL) 9:25 PM 8:15 AM Mon, Wed, Fri
Melbourne (MEL) Los Angeles (LAX) 10:25 AM 6:10 AM Wed, Fri, Sun

The airline’s presence on this route will enhance market competition, potentially reducing airfare costs and making travel between Victoria and the U.S. more affordable.

Delta’s extensive network through its LAX hub will also allow passengers to seamlessly connect to over 40 destinations across the United States and Latin America.

Economic Benefits

Victoria’s tourism sector stands to gain significantly from this initiative. The US is Victoria’s fourth-largest international tourism market, with over 200,000 visitors recorded in the year ending September 2024, generating approximately $358 million in tourism-related revenue.

The increased flight capacity is expected to drive further growth, attracting more North American visitors, who are known for their interest in outdoor and adventure experiences.

The new flight route is part of a broader collaboration between the Allan Labor Government and Melbourne Airport, supported by the Industry Partnerships Program (IPP).

This program enables Visit Victoria to match industry funding for destination marketing, further enhancing efforts to attract international visitors.

Government officials and industry leaders have emphasized the significance of this expansion:

  • Steve Dimopoulos, Minister for Tourism, Sport, and Major Events: “These new Delta flights will support Victoria’s tourism industry, benefiting local businesses, hotels, and restaurants while making travel more accessible for families.”
  • Colin Brooks, Minister for Industry and Advanced Manufacturing: “More flights mean increased competition, lower airfare costs, and greater economic opportunities for tourism and trade.”
  • Danny Pearson, Minister for Economic Growth and Jobs: “Direct flights from LA will enhance trade relationships with North American partners and strengthen Victoria’s economy.”
  • Lorie Argus, CEO of Melbourne Airport: “Delta’s entry into the Pacific route will help restore pre-pandemic flight capacity and improve business connectivity.”
