ATLANTA- Major US carrier, Delta Air Lines (DL) announced the return of its popular retro wrap dress after abandoning The Gap’s new uniform design project initiated in 2022.
The airline communicated this decision to employees on Thursday (January 16, 2025), marking a significant shift in its uniform strategy, PYOK flagged.
Delta Abandoning New Crew Uniform
The March 2024 prototype uniform unveiling received minimal enthusiasm from staff members, leading to operational safety concerns.
Safety evaluations revealed potential issues with the new designs potentially hindering emergency evacuation procedures, prompting Delta to reassess the uniform program within months of its showcase.
Delta Air Lines discontinued three signature dress designs from The Gap’s prototype collection due to safety concerns. The flare dress, draped dress, and asymmetrical pleated dress, which drew comparisons to costumes from The Handmaid’s Tale, failed to meet operational safety standards.
The airline will now redesign its uniforms using traditional Delta colors, incorporating deep navy blues and burgundy. Delta retains the v-neck and winged dress designs while modifying their fabrics in blue and red variations. The carrier plans to reintroduce its pre-2018 wrap dress, marking a departure from the Zac Posen era uniforms.
Delta eliminated the controversial ‘passport plum’ color in 2023, distancing itself from the Zac Posen collection that sparked multiple lawsuits. Workers reported severe reactions to toxic chemicals in these garments, leading nearly 50% of flight attendants to wear personal clothing instead of official uniforms.
Despite abandoning The Gap prototypes, Delta commits to using OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100-certified fabrics for future uniforms.
The airline will conduct extensive wear testing before implementing the revised uniform program across its 70,000 frontline employees, though no specific timeline has been announced.
Riyadh Air Modern Uniform
Riyadh Air (RX), the Public Investment Fund’s new premium carrier, unveiled its inaugural fashion collection during Paris Haute Couture Week, collaborating with Saudi designer Ashi of ASHI Studio. The showcase featured 15 designs from an extensive collection of crew uniforms.
The luxury collection displayed Electric Amethyst for women and Dark Amethyst for men, drawing inspiration from Saudi Arabia’s lavender fields. The designs incorporate high-end materials including cashmere outerwear, fine wool garments, custom leather footwear, amethyst earrings, and distinctive pillbox hats.
Ashi integrated Riyadh Air’s brand elements into the uniform designs, featuring the airline’s canopy twist motif in the garments’ lines and silhouettes. The collection allows seasonal variations for cabin crew, pilots, concierges, and airport agents, ensuring year-round adaptability.
The Paris event attracted senior stakeholders, diplomats, and celebrities, marking a significant milestone in Saudi aviation history. Riyadh Air utilized the occasion to strengthen its partnership with Lucid Motors, emphasizing its shared commitment to sustainable transportation initiatives.
The collection merges 1950s aviation glamour with contemporary styling, aligning with Riyadh Air’s future-focused brand identity. The presentation showcased ten women’s and five men’s ensembles, featuring signature accessories designed to complement the airline’s forthcoming cabin interiors.
The uniforms’ color palette harmonizes with the aircraft livery, establishing a cohesive visual identity across all brand touchpoints. This integration of Saudi cultural elements with haute couture positions Riyadh Air within the premium aviation sector before its operational launch.
