QUITO— Three Delta Air Lines (DL) flight attendants were injured during flight DL632 from Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) on Monday, September 15, 2025.

The Boeing 767 encountered moderate turbulence mid-flight, leading to minor injuries among crew members. Despite this, the attendants continued performing their duties until the aircraft landed safely in Atlanta, where medical teams met the plane to provide care.

Three Delta Attendants Injured

Delta Air Lines (DL) reported that the turbulence occurred en route from Quito (UIO) to Atlanta (ATL). The affected crew sustained non-serious injuries, with no impact on passenger safety or flight operations. Medical personnel assessed the attendants upon arrival in Atlanta, confirming that no passengers required treatment.

The airline highlighted that the aircraft, a Boeing 767, completed its journey without further issues. The incident serves as another reminder of the unpredictable nature of turbulence, particularly on long-haul international routes.

Delta’s Response and Safety Protocols

Delta Air Lines (DL) confirmed that safety remained the top priority throughout the event.

The carrier emphasized that its crews are trained to manage in-flight turbulence and ensure passenger well-being under unexpected conditions.

Following protocol, Delta arranged for medical support on arrival at Atlanta (ATL). The airline noted that the attendants’ injuries were minor, allowing them to assist passengers until the aircraft reached its destination.

Delta Flight 56, which departed Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) aboard an Airbus A330-900, diverted roughly two hours into its nine-hour transatlantic journey.

The aircraft landed safely at MSP at 19:45 local time, where medical teams attended to passengers and crew.

Emergency Diversion to Minneapolis

Delta Flight DL56 was carrying 275 passengers and 13 crew members when it hit what the airline described as “significant turbulence” shortly after departure. Conditions deteriorated rapidly, prompting the flight crew to divert for safety.

Flight tracking data shows the aircraft left SLC at 16:30 local time (22:45 UTC). After cruising for just over two hours, the A330-900 rerouted and touched down at MSP at 00:51 UTC. Medical personnel were ready at the gate, and 25 passengers were taken to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment.

The aircraft involved was an Airbus A330-900, registration N422DZ. At just 2.3 years old, it is powered by two Rolls-Royce (RR) Trent 7000 engines.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has recorded 207 cases of serious turbulence-related injuries in the United States since 2009. These are defined as injuries requiring hospital stays of more than 48 hours.

Severe turbulence typically exerts forces greater than 1.5g, strong enough to lift unbuckled passengers from their seats. While rare compared to the more than 35 million flights operated annually worldwide, about 5,000 turbulence incidents occur each year.
