TAMPA- Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines (DL) flight from Tampa International Airport (TPA) to Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) suffers a bird strike on January 29, 2025.

According to the published schedule, Delta operates one to three daily flights between Tampa and Raleigh-Durham.

Delta Flight Suffers Bird Strike

According to FlightRadar24 data, Delta flight DL1279 or DAL1279 took off from Tampa at 8:45 PM UTC.

After being airborne for around over one hour, the flight crew reported that a bird hit them during approach.

The flight crew decided to continue their approach and landed safely at Raleigh Durham at 10:10 PM UTC on Runway 23R-5L. The aircraft taxied safely to the terminal and after passengers and crew disembarked safely, the delta techops team inspected the aircraft for damage.

The plane did not suffer any heavy damage, the aircraft continued its flight from RDU to Orlando (MCO) as per its schedule.

The aircraft involved in the incident is Airbus A320, registered as N327NW. Further, it is a 33-year-old aircraft, powered by two CFM 56-5A engines.

The aircraft remained grounded at Dakar airport when initial reports emerged, indicating the severity of the incident.

United 737 Damaged

On March 23, 2024, A United Airlines (UA) Boeing 737-9 MAX executing flight UA1003 returned to San Francisco International Airport after sustaining window damage from a bird strike during its initial climb on Saturday.

The aircraft reached 5,000 feet altitude after its 5:04 a.m. departure before executing a safe landing 25 minutes later. United Airlines confirmed the incident on Tuesday, reporting that passengers transferred to a replacement Boeing 737-9 MAX, arriving in Denver with a 3½-hour delay.

The affected aircraft resumed normal operations by Sunday, completing the same route rotation. This incident adds to the 2,300 bird strikes reported in 2023, with most occurrences during takeoff and landing phases.

San Francisco International Airport implements an FAA-approved Wildlife Hazard Management Plan to minimize wildlife-related incidents. The airport maintains a strike rate of 18 incidents per 100,000 aircraft operations, employing strategies such as trapping and relocating specific bird species.
