Delta Flight Engine Issues

According to Flight Radar 24 data, Delta flight DL105 took off from Atlanta at 11:31 PM UTC (6:31 AM local time).

Shortly after takeoff at 4,725 feet, the Delta flight crew reported an engine fire and mechanical issue on its left engine. Following this they contacted the ATC and without declaring an emergency, decided to land back in Atlanta.

The flight landed safely at 12:07 AM UTC (7:07 AM local time). However, they did not have time to dump and burn extra fuel and made a heavy landing. Following this, the firetrucks were alerted and they sprayed the water on the brakes due to overheating.

The aircraft involved in the incident is Airbus A330neo (A330-941), registered as N408DX. Further, it is a 4.3-year-old aircraft and is powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 Engines.

The airline re-accommodated all 257 passengers on another aircraft and the flight took off again. However, passengers reached their destination with a 5-hour delay.

Delta spokesperson apologized to its customers for such an incident and significant delay.

Furthermore, the FAA has initiated its investigation and will find out the exact cause of the occurrence on the first day of the new year.

Also, Channel 2 Action News reported that a person walking on the street shared a video of a Delta flight emanating fire from the engine, accompanied by loud explosive sounds before the flames self-extinguished.

Similar Incident

It’s not the first time that a Delta plane engine caught fire, especially not for Airbus A330s.

An Airbus A330 operated by Delta Air Lines experienced an engine fire at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) during pre-departure preparations for flight DL112 to Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO) on October 22, 2024.

The Federal Aviation Administration initiated an investigation into the incident. According to their Aviation Accidents and Incidents report, the crew reported engine trouble around 7 p.m. local time. Airport Fire and Rescue teams responded swiftly, extinguishing the fire in the aircraft’s Number 1 engine before the plane safely returned to the gate.

The aircraft carried 152 passengers, all of whom remained unharmed during the incident. Following a maintenance inspection, Delta’s technical teams determined the aircraft required additional repairs, leading to the flight’s cancellation.

A Delta spokesperson told Aviation A2Z, that the aborted takeoff resulted from engine complications. The airline began the process of rebooking affected passengers on alternative flights.
