PHOENIX- The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into a critical near-collision incident between two passenger jets at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) on Saturday (Jan 11, 2025).
The event involved Delta Air Lines (DL) Flight DL1070 from Detroit and United Airlines (UA) Flight UA1724 from San Francisco, carrying a combined total of 374 passengers.
Delta and United Collision Avoided
The incident occurred at 11 a.m. local time when both aircraft received simultaneous collision warnings during their landing approaches.
Flight data from Flightradar24 reveals the aircraft came dangerously close, with vertical separation dropping to 425 feet before the horizontal distance narrowed to less than a quarter mile within seconds.
Air traffic control recordings received by CBS News document the sequence of events. Controllers initially cleared the United Boeing 737 to land on Runway 7 right, while directing the Delta Airbus A330 to position for landing on Runway 8.
The situation triggered automated collision warnings in both cockpits, with urgent “descend, descend” commands recorded in the background.
Quick intervention from air traffic control through corrective instructions enabled both aircraft to execute safe landings. The Delta flight carried 245 passengers on its Airbus A330, while the United Boeing 737 transported 129 passengers.
This incident adds to a growing pattern of near-collisions in U.S. airspace.
Similar Incidents
At Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in December 2024, Delta Flight DL471 began its takeoff roll while a Key Lime Air charter, carrying the Gonzaga men’s basketball team, crossed the active runway.
Swift intervention from air traffic control prevented a potential collision at critical takeoff speeds between 150 and 180 miles per hour.
The incident sequence continued at Boston Logan International Airport on October 27, 2024, when Delta Flight DL59 from London Heathrow executed an emergency go-around maneuver to avoid collision with a departing aircraft.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the Airbus A330 performed the safety procedure at 12:45 p.m. local time, maintaining operational safety throughout the incident.
This event preceded another go-around maneuver by Delta flight DL2196 at the same airport, marking a concerning pattern in runway management and aircraft separation protocols.
