A British man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to drown his daughter-in-law in a swimming pool during a family holiday in Florida. The incident occurred following an argument about his grandchildren at their rental accommodation.

Mark Raymond Gibbon, 62, from Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire, allegedly attacked the 33-year-old woman at the Solterra Resort in Davenport on Sunday. Police responded to reports of a disturbance in a back-yard swimming pool at around 5.20pm local time.

Alleged attack in pool

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said Gibbon allegedly pushed and held the victim's head under water multiple times, preventing her from breathing. The attack reportedly stemmed from an argument between the pair about his grandchildren.

The alleged assault only stopped when holidaymakers staying next door said they had called the sheriff's office. The victim's nine-year-old daughter also jumped into the pool in an attempt to stop the incident, according to Sheriff Judd.

Charges and arrest

Gibbon was arrested and taken to Polk County Jail where he was charged with attempted second-degree murder and battery. The charges relate to the alleged drowning attempt at the Florida resort.

Sheriff Judd said in a statement that whilst Polk County welcomes visitors from across the world, they expect vacationers to behave appropriately. He added that because Gibbon "couldn't control his anger, he may find himself spending a lot more time in Florida than he had anticipated".
