SAN FRANCISCO- A British Airways (BA) cabin crew member was discovered deceased in his hotel room during a layover in San Francisco (SFO), causing the cancellation of the return flight to London Heathrow (LHR).
The young crew member failed to report for duty, prompting colleagues to raise the alarm. Hotel staff at the Marriott Marquis found him in his room, where he may have been deceased for up to two days, leaving fellow crew members too distraught to operate the scheduled service.

British Airways Crew Found Dead
The deceased crew member, described as a “popular” team member, had checked into the Marriott Marquis on Tuesday following the transatlantic flight from London.
When he didn’t appear for the Thursday return flight to Heathrow, his absence triggered concern among colleagues who were waiting in the hotel reception area.
According to a British Airways source quoted in The Sun newspaper: “There was no way the flight back from San Francisco could go ahead. Staff were in absolute bits at the sudden loss of their friend.”
The pilots, who had already departed for the airport, returned to the hotel to support their colleagues after learning of the tragedy.
British Airways operates two daily direct flights between London Heathrow and San Francisco International Airport. Passengers affected by the cancellation were provided accommodation until they could be rebooked on alternative flights.
Notably, passengers were not informed about the specific reason for the flight cancellation. The airline prioritized the well-being of its crew members, recognizing the emotional impact of the situation.
This marks the second recent tragedy involving British Airways crew during international layovers. In November, a 47-year-old senior first officer collapsed and died at a luxury hotel in St. Lucia during a Caribbean layover. That incident reportedly left crew members requiring counseling support.

Similar Incident
A 47-year-old British Airways senior first officer died unexpectedly at a luxury hotel in St. Lucia on November 4, 2024, forcing the cancellation of flight BA2158 to London Gatwick.
The veteran pilot collapsed in a public area of the hotel while on a scheduled layover between flights, shocking nearby vacationers. Officials have not released the pilot’s identity.
This sudden death has severely impacted British Airways’ operational capabilities and crew morale. The airline immediately implemented support measures, providing professional counseling services to affected staff members.
“The senior first officer brought vibrant energy to our team. His sudden passing at such a young age has deeply affected our entire staff,” a British Airways source told The Sun.
British Airways management has begun coordinating with St. Lucian authorities regarding the incident while maintaining ongoing communication with the deceased pilot’s family.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of our colleague at this difficult time,” British Airways stated in their official response.
In a separate incident, a British Airways Boeing 777 made an unplanned return to London Gatwick Airport after encountering technical difficulties during its transatlantic journey to San Jose, Costa Rica.
Flightradar24 tracking data shows the aircraft departed London with a 30-minute delay. After five hours over the Atlantic Ocean, pilots executed an unexpected U-turn, abandoning their planned route to Costa Rica.
The aircraft, designed to carry more than 300 passengers, spent nine hours airborne only to land at its original departure point. This deviation from the standard 5,431-mile, 10-hour route forced passengers to restart their journey.
British Airways addressed this separate technical incident: “We’re sorry for the delay in our customers’ travel plans after their aircraft experienced a minor technical issue.”
