LONDON- Passengers are experiencing significant disruption at Gatwick Airport (LGW) following the closure of a runway due to overheated brakes on a British Airways (BA) Boeing 777 aircraft.

On what is believed to be the busiest day of the year, airport fire service vehicles escorted the aircraft off the runway, resulting in 23 flight cancellations.

British Airways 777 Rejects Takeoff

Thousands of passengers face further disruption at Gatwick Airport, with delays affecting at least 13 flights scheduled to depart between 2 PM and 3:30 PM, according to the airport’s website.

The runway, closed for 50 minutes due to overheated brakes on a British Airways London to Vancouver (YVR) flight BA2279, has now reopened. During the closure, 16 inbound flights were diverted.

“Safety is our top priority, and London Gatwick’s dedicated airport fire service swiftly attended to support the aircraft,” an airport spokesperson told Sky News.

“The runway is now open and operating as normal. However, 23 flights were cancelled, and there are delays due to the knock-on impact. We are working with our airlines and other airport partners to minimize disruption. Passengers should contact their airlines directly for the latest flight information,” added Gatwick spokesperson.

Safety is always our top priority, and we apologize to customers for the inconvenience caused.”

British Airways explained that the pilots took a “precautionary” measure and apologized for the inconvenience. “Our pilots took the precautionary decision to cancel take-off due to a technical issue,” a spokesperson said.

Some Flights Diverted to Nearby Airports

Travel expert Simon Calder informed Sky News that at least a dozen flights were diverted, with one flight from Dubai forced to land in Brussels after circling Gatwick.

A passenger reported that their flight, diverted to Heathrow, remains grounded until a departure slot is available for takeoff and landing at Gatwick.

“Cancellations on top of cancellations have already begun,” the passenger stated. “With crew and passengers now out of position, we can expect significant delays and possibly more cancellations throughout the day.”

Several flights have faced hours-long delays, including a Wizz Air (W6) flight to Malaga, originally scheduled for 3:25 PM, now expected to depart at 7:30 PM. A British Airways flight to Dubrovnik, set for 4:45 PM, is delayed until 8:45 PM.

As the world’s busiest single-runway airport, Gatwick continues to manage the ongoing disruptions and challenges.

On Sunday, a major power cut grounded all flights at two terminals of Manchester Airport, causing disruptions that continued into Monday.

In May, a nationwide border issue affected at least nine airports, including Stansted and Gatwick, with problems related to e-gates at passport control.
