Second Bengaluru Airport Locations

The state government aims to secure approval from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) swiftly. This urgency stems from competition with neighboring Tamil Nadu, which plans to develop an international airport in Hosur, located 40-50 km from Bengaluru.

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and Infrastructure Development Minister MB Patil led a meeting to review presentations on the proposed locations. These presentations were delivered by Infrastructure Development Corporation (Karnataka) Ltd (iDeCK) and Boston Consulting Group.

Shivakumar, who also oversees Bengaluru City Development, emphasized the need for quick action to prevent other states from seizing this opportunity. The government’s proactive approach reflects its commitment to enhancing Bengaluru’s aviation infrastructure and maintaining its competitive edge in the region.

The Karnataka government is moving forward with plans for a second airport in Bengaluru, with seven potential locations under consideration. Infrastructure Development Minister M.B. Patil announced that the government will submit a detailed application to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) outlining all seven sites.

AAI officials will conduct on-site assessments to determine the feasibility of each location. The evaluation process will take into account various factors, including passenger density, connectivity, industrial growth, and cargo potential. Environmental considerations, such as the presence of rivers, hills, and biodiversity, will also play a crucial role in the decision-making process.

New Airport by 2035

Patil and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar are scheduled to brief Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on the proposed locations for the second airport.

The current timeline targets the commissioning of the new airport by 2035, aligning with the expiration of a 25-year agreement with Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) that prohibits a second airport in Bengaluru until 2033-34.

A study conducted by iDeCK has identified Harohalli and Dobbaspet as the two frontrunners among the seven shortlisted locations. However, the selection process must carefully consider the ongoing commercial viability of KIA.

Airspace management will be a critical factor in the final decision. The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) airport will play a significant role in clearing airspace for the new facility.

The government will submit the identified locations to the AAI’s site clearance committee. The committee will make its decision in consultation with HAL and after evaluating the impact on KIA’s continued commercial viability.

Patil emphasized that political considerations will not influence the selection of the second airport’s location. Instead, the decision will be guided by approximately 15 parameters set by the AAI, as well as the overall development of Karnataka, including Bengaluru.
