BENGALURU- The expansion of Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) Terminal 2 (T2) is set to begin by early next year, marking a major step in enhancing Bengaluru’s aviation infrastructure.

Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has planned to expand T2 by 2.78 lakh sq m, adding 40 apron stands and a 28,000 sq m walkway to connect T1 and T2. The project, expected to finish by 2028, aims to raise annual passenger capacity beyond 85 million.

Bengaluru Airport T2 Expansion

Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has initiated the process for Phase 2 of T2 expansion.

The project will add 2.78 lakh sq m to the terminal, create 40 apron stands, and develop a 28,000 sq m walkway for direct connectivity between T1 and T2.

Phase 2 will extend the “Terminal in a Garden” design introduced in Phase 1, which became operational in 2023.

Spread over 2.55 lakh sq m, Phase 1 already handles more than 16 million passengers annually and will soon reach its 25 million passenger capacity.

With T1 exceeding its design limit of 30 million passengers and handling 70,000 daily, the additional expansion is critical.

Passenger Traffic and Future Demand

Kempegowda International Airport handled 41.88 million passengers in 2024-25, averaging 1.15 lakh daily across T1 and T2. International traffic is growing rapidly, particularly during midnight to early morning hours.

Reported by Deccan Herald, wide-bodied aircraft are expected to arrive from 2027-28, requiring additional gates and apron capacity for long-haul flights.

The airport is already the busiest in South India and the third busiest in the country. Passenger traffic grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14% between 2022-23 and 2024-25, highlighting the need for expanded infrastructure.

EPC Contract and Project Execution

BIAL has invited expressions of interest for an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract.

The selected contractor will manage excavation, civil, structural, architectural, MEPF, ICT, landscape, airport systems, apron pavement works, and Operational Readiness and Transfer (ORAT) for the project. Proposals are due by October 15.

Construction is expected to begin by late 2024 or early 2025, with Phase 2 scheduled for completion in 2028.

The new facilities will rise on the southern side of the airport, closer to the city. A dedicated walkway will also link T1’s extended arm to T2 Phase 1 for seamless connectivity.

Long Term Development

BIAL Chief Operating Officer Satyaki Raghunath confirmed that ₹17,000 crore will be invested by 2029 to expand airside, landside, and terminal capacity.

Plans for a third terminal (T3) are also being prepared, which could raise total passenger capacity to 110 million annually.

Meanwhile, Karnataka is exploring a second greenfield airport for Bengaluru. Three potential sites have been shortlisted, including two along Kanakapura Road.

There are also discussions about reviving HAL Airport (BLR-H) for domestic operations. Officials from the Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC), which holds a 13% stake in BIAL, clarified that these proposals are independent of Kempegowda’s expansion.
