JAKARTA– A Batik Air (ID) Boeing 737-800 (registration PK-LDJ) came dangerously close to disaster while landing at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport during a heavy storm on Saturday evening, June 28, 2025.

Batik Boeing 737-800 was caught in fierce crosswinds and torrential rain. The aircraft tilted sharply during final approach, with the right wing dipping so low that its engine nearly scraped the runway.

Thanks to sharp instincts and calm execution, the pilots managed to stabilize the jet just in time, averting what could have been a serious accident.

Batik Air 737 Dangerous Landing

The aircraft was arriving from Ambon (AMQ), a domestic route with 177 people on board. The flight faced severe turbulence and wind shear as it descended into Jakarta.

Footage filmed from the ground was shared widely across social media platforms like Instagram and X.

The video shows the 737 lurching dramatically to one side as it came near the runway and touched down. The right engine came alarmingly close to contact, sparking concern from passengers and onlookers around.

Despite the conditions, the aircraft managed to land without any injuries or damage. Passengers, visibly shaken, disembarked safely.

The airline’s engineering team conducted a post-landing inspection and cleared the aircraft for continued service. The aircraft later departed to Kuala Lumpur.

Crew Calmly Handled the Situation

Batik Air confirmed that the pilots followed standard operating procedures throughout. According to airline spokesperson Danang Mandala Prihantoro, the flight crew acted in line with training and handled the crosswind landing by the book.

Indonesia’s Director General of Civil Aviation, Novie Riyanto, acknowledged the professionalism of the pilots and confirmed that a deeper investigation will look at both meteorological data and flight operations.

Veteran pilots and analysts weighed in as well. They noted that while the Boeing 737 is designed to endure such conditions, incidents like this highlight just how crucial pilot judgment and rapid decision-making are—especially when the weather turns without warning.

Climate and Aviation Safety

Meteorologists have confirmed that the aircraft encountered a strong crosswind and possible wind shear. These dangerous conditions are increasingly common during Indonesia’s monsoon season. And this isn’t just a local problem. Around the world, pilots are being forced to contend with more frequent, unpredictable storms due to climate change.

Microbursts, sudden wind shifts, and heavy downpours are putting stress on even well-prepared flight crews. The aviation community is starting to ask harder questions about how training, infrastructure, and weather tracking can evolve fast enough to keep up.

While the incident didn’t make international headlines right away, social media lit up almost instantly. Batik Air says it remains committed to upholding safety protocols and supporting its crew through routine and emergency scenarios alike.

Experts are renewing calls for stronger simulation training that focuses on handling real-world weather extremes, and faster communication between meteorologists and air traffic control to warn of sudden risks.

Final Thoughts

The 737’s landing in Jakarta could’ve ended very differently. That it didn’t is a testament to the skill and composure of the pilots at the controls.

But it’s also a signal that flight safety demands constant vigilance, better tools, and faster data, especially in an era of increasing climate volatility.
