A ground service worker at Helsinki Airport met a fatal end early Saturday morning when they became trapped between an Airbus A350-900 and a lavatory service vehicle. The incident transpired following the arrival of Finnair flight AY62 from Tokyo Haneda at 4:21 a.m. on November 2, 2024.

The accident involved a five-year-old Airbus A350-900, registered as OH-LWO, distinguished by its Moomin livery. The worker initiated standard lavatory servicing procedures after passenger disembarkation, utilizing mobile air stairs to connect the waste hose from the service truck to the aircraft’s fuselage.

The situation turned fatal when a towing crew began moving the aircraft to a remote parking position, unaware of the ongoing lavatory servicing operation beneath the aircraft’s rear section. The movement resulted in the worker becoming fatally crushed between the aircraft and the waste service vehicle.

Law enforcement received notification at 5:14 a.m. and launched a criminal investigation focusing on the towing crew’s actions. Aviator Finland, the ground handling company employing the deceased worker, has commenced staff meetings to address the incident.

This tragedy follows a previous serious incident at Helsinki Airport in early 2020, where a Finnair flight attendant sustained severe injuries after falling 3.6 meters from an Airbus A320’s open door. That incident occurred at a remote stand during passenger deplaning operations via mobile airstairs.
