American Airlines 787 Grounded at Amsterdam

Let’s start with the first problem, According to FlightRadar24 data, American Airlines flight AA203 took off from Amsterdam at 1:46 PM UTC. Shortly after takeoff, the flight crew requested to maintain a Flight Level of 6,000 feet (FL060) due to a technical problem, initially planning to continue along the departure route.

However, they later modified their decision to remain near the airport, subsequently climbing to FL130 (13,000 feet) while maintaining below-minimum clean speed.

The aircraft performed fuel dumping procedures over the North Sea before executing a safe landing on runway 18R. The flight landed safely back in Amsterdam at 3:16 PM UTC, almost 90 minutes later from its departure.

The aircraft involved in the incident is a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, registered as N819AN. Further, it is a 7.8-year-old aircraft powered by GEnX engines.

The technical issue was related to flap operations. However, after landing, the airline decided to operate a flight the next day and they faced a second trouble.

Second Issue

American Airlines tried to operate a return flight the next day as AA9605 from Amsterdam at 1:30 PM local time and was scheduled to arrive in Philadelphia at 3:32 PM local time.

However, the flight crew reported that there was a hydraulic oil leak from the aircraft. Following this, they canceled the flight.

And since then it’s grounded in Amsterdam. It’s been over 2 days (53+ Hours at the time of publication of these posts).

These aircraft can carry a total of 234 passengers in three class configurations:

  • Business Class: 20 Seats
  • Premium Economy Class: 28 Seats
  • Economy Seats: 186 seats (48 Extra spacious seats)

However, the exact number of passengers and crew is not known yet.

Passengers Remarks

One passenger showed his frustration on X and wrote:

@AmericanAir you are a disaster, 300 people are stuck in Amsterdam airport (flight to Philadelphia) for the 2nd day in a row, with two cancellations (the first after spending 2 hours in the air dumping fuel and making it back to Amsterdam), your crew, pilot handled it very poorly (aa9605, aa203).”

Another passenger wrote:

@AmericanAir what ON EARTH is going on with the aircraft for your Amsterdam to Philly flight? First AA203 turns back mid-flight yesterday for a wing-flap ISSUE, now today AA9605 (same exact aircraft/tail number) springs a hydraulic leak after pushing back for takeoff?!

American Airlines responded and wrote:

We never want to begin any trip like this. Please be assured that our team is hard at work to get you on your way as soon as possible.

American Airlines on X

The passenger replied and wrote: “It’s hard to work on it when all the on-site AA customer service agents in Amsterdam were fired. The entire plane was told to call customer service to rebook. This is day 3 in a row my parents have had their flight canceled. Weather is one thing – bad maintenance is another.”

American responded and wrote: “Safety for our customers and crew is always the top priority. We appreciate extra patience while we get the plane prepared for overseas travel.”
