DELHI- The Airports Authority of India (AAI) increased its spending on repairs and maintenance for 101 airports by nearly 20% in the last fiscal year. The total expenditure reached Rs 796 crore ($95 Million), up from Rs 663 crore ($79 Million) in the previous year.

AAI’s maintenance costs have been rising steadily since 2021-22. In that fiscal year, the authority spent Rs 535 crore on repairs and upkeep. This figure jumped to Rs 663 crore in 2022-23 and further increased to Rs 796 crore in the year ending March 2024.

AAI Spent 796 Crore for Repairs and Maintenance

The civil aviation ministry provided these figures to the Rajya Sabha, India’s upper house of parliament. The data covers 121 AAI-operated airports, though 20 of these facilities received no maintenance funding.

This increased spending comes amid growing concerns about airport infrastructure maintenance. The collapse of a forecourt canopy at Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1D during heavy rains on June 28 highlighted these issues.

AAI faces new infrastructure challenges as airport canopies collapse in multiple locations. Tensile fabric kerb areas tore at Jabalpur Airport on June 27 and Rajkot Airport on June 29, following the Delhi incident.

Civil Aviation Minister Murlidhar Mohol announced mandatory third-party audits of airport structural stability. He ordered thorough evaluations of civil, electrical, and technical aspects before each monsoon season.

Airport construction follows National Building Codes and considers various factors for safety and durability. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) conducts annual inspections of licensed airports’ airside infrastructure.

AAI and public-private partnerships plan to invest over Rs 91,000 crore from 2019-20 to 2024-25. This substantial sum targets the development, upgrades, and modernization of airports across India.
