Air New Zealand (NZ) is the flag carrier of New Zealand and one of three major full-service airlines in Oceania, alongside Fiji Airways and Qantas (QF). A relatively young airline with 60 years under its belt, the Star Alliance member operates a fleet of over 100 aircraft and flies to nearly 50 destinations within its territory as well as to overseas airports in 18 countries.

Air New Zealand Flight Attendant Salary

Air New Zealand’s flight attendant salaries fall within the average income earned by a trained individual in the country.

They are not paid as well as their counterparts at Qantas or some at Middle Eastern airlines make, although with the airline planning to exponentially expand its wings in the years to come, that could soon change with increased demand for the skillset.

At present, ANZ flight attendants on the entry level make between NZ$45,000 and NZ$50,000 per annum, or roughly between US$27,000 and US$30,000.

Those with three to five years of experience are paid up to NZ$65,000 per annum (approx. US$39,000) while the most senior crop of pursers and cabin managers touch the NZ$85,000 (approx. US$51,000) mark yearly.

Air New Zealand’s cabin crew works for roughly 14 days a month and can expect to be rostered with 70 to 80 flying hours a month. While the exact breakdown for hourly rates in flight, layover allowances, and other per diems is not known, approximately NZ$10,000 (approx. US$6,000) is the amount paid out by the airline to each of its flight attendants during a calendar year.

How to Become a Flight Attendant with Air New Zealand?

Air New Zealand requires its flight attendants to match or exceed the criteria below to be considered for a role.

  • NZ Citizenship, Australian Citizenship, NZ Permanent Residency, or Australian Permanent Residence. An ability to travel overseas is required, including a valid passport with a minimum of 2 years’ validity.
  • 18 years of age from the time of application
  • Minimum 2 years of proven experience in a customer-facing role in a high-pressure environment is preferred. Hiring Process

Air New Zealand has the following steps in its recruitment process for flight attendants.

  1. APPLICATION – All interested candidates can submit their resume and other relevant documentation required to become a flight attendant with Air NZ on their careers portal.
  2. VIDEO INTERVIEW – Candidates who meet all the minimum requirements will first be invited to complete a short online video interview. This initial step allows the recruitment team to assess their communication style and overall presentation.
  3. COGNITIVE ASSIGNMENT – Those who progress will then be asked to complete a cognitive assessment, which helps evaluate problem-solving abilities and decision-making skills.
  4. ASSESSMENT DAY – Successful applicants will be invited to attend an assessment centre. This stage includes group exercises and scenarios designed to gauge customer service strengths, teamwork, and suitability for the cabin crew role.
  5. BACKGROUND AND PHYSICAL CHECKS – Candidates who perform well will move on to a checking process. This includes providing two professional references, obtaining medical and police clearances, and completing a swim test. A first aid certificate is also required.
  6. ADDITION TO TALENT POOL – Once all checks are successfully completed, candidates will be added to Air New Zealand’s talent pool. The talent acquisition team will reach out when a place becomes available on a paid cabin crew training course – the final step before officially starting their journey as a member of the Air New Zealand team.
