Air India, IndiGo and Akasa Boost Flights from Srinagar After Pahalgam Attack

NEW DELHI- Following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, major Indian carriers Air India (AI), IndiGo (6E), and Akasa Air (QP) have rapidly expanded their flight operations to and from Srinagar (SXR).

The incident has prompted this coordinated response from both government authorities and private airlines to assist travellers and victims during this crisis.

Airlines Add Flights to Srinagar

The Pahalgam attack occurred around 3 PM on April 22, when terrorists reportedly opened fire at a crowded market near the Lidder River in Pahalgam. At least 26 people were killed and many others injured in the incident.

Emergency services reportedly faced difficulties reaching the attack site due to narrow roads in the area. Residents stepped in to help, transporting injured victims in private vehicles and on makeshift stretchers.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu met with airline operators and instructed them to assist in transporting deceased victims to their home states.

Air India

Air India (AI) has added 2 additional flights from Srinagar (SXR) on Wednesday, April 23. These include departures to Delhi (DEL) at 11:30 AM and to Mumbai (BOM) at 12:00 noon. The airline confirmed all other scheduled flights to and from Srinagar (SXR) will operate normally.

“Air India is also offering complimentary rescheduling and full refunds on cancellations to passengers with confirmed bookings till 30th April 2025 on these sectors.”

IndiGo

IndiGo airline (6E) has also stepped up operations, announcing 2 special flights on April 23. The carrier stated: “In light of the current situation in #Srinagar, we’ve extended waivers on rescheduling and cancellations.”

Akasa Air

Akasa Air (QP) has implemented flexible travel policies for passengers travelling on Srinagar routes. Customers can now cancel bookings for flights between April 23 and 29, 2025, to or from Srinagar (SXR) and receive full refunds without additional charges.

The airline is also allowing passengers to reschedule their flights once without penalty or fare difference for travel within seven days of their original departure date.

MoCA Intervenes

“Airlines have been directed to maintain regular fare levels, ensuring that no passenger is burdened during this sensitive time,” the Civil Aviation Ministry stated.

The government has arranged 4 special evacuation flights from Srinagar (SXR)—2 to Delhi (DEL) and 2 to Mumbai (BOM). Additional aircraft remain on standby to accommodate further evacuation needs if required.

Minister Naidu has directed all airlines to fully cooperate in transporting deceased individuals to their home states. Airlines will coordinate these efforts with state governments and local authorities to ensure the dignified transfer of the victims.
