DELHI— A scheduled flight by Air India Express (IX) from Delhi (DEL) to Mumbai (BOM) aborted takeoff on July 23, 2025, due to a minor technical snag, affecting over 160 passengers onboard.

The flight IX1163, originally set to depart at 9:20 PM, was grounded temporarily after the pilots identified a cockpit screen malfunction. A replacement aircraft departed later at 12:29 AM.

Air India Express Flight Aborts Takeoff

The decision to halt takeoff at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) was made by the cockpit crew of Air India Express (IX) upon noticing an issue with the flight instruments.

Specifically, the screens that display critical speed parameters were not functioning properly — a safety-sensitive system essential during takeoff.

Air India Express confirmed that the action was taken in line with standard safety protocols. “The crew of our Delhi–Mumbai flight elected to reject takeoff following a minor technical issue,” a spokesperson said.

The aircraft, preparing for takeoff on a runway occupied by dense evening traffic, was halted promptly to prevent any safety compromise. All passengers were safely deboarded and transported back to the terminal.

Delayed Departure

After the aborted takeoff, Air India Express arranged for an alternative aircraft to resume service. Passengers were accommodated onboard the replacement, which departed at 12:29 AM — over three hours later than the original scheduled time.

The airline expressed regret over the delay while reiterating its focus on passenger safety. “We regret the inconvenience while reiterating that safety remains paramount in all our operations,” the statement added.

Despite the delay, no injuries or security breaches were reported, and the affected aircraft remained grounded for inspection.

Air India Express (IX), a low-cost subsidiary of Air India (AI), has consistently prioritized operational safety. The airline’s decision to abort takeoff — even for a minor screen malfunction — reflects adherence to strict aviation safety norms.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to receive a technical report on the incident, although no formal investigation has been announced.

Similar Incident

An Air India (AI) flight bound for Kolkata (CCU) aborted its takeoff at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) on July 21, 2025, after a high-speed technical anomaly was detected during runway acceleration.

The Airbus A321 aircraft operating flight AI2403 was accelerating for departure when pilots initiated an emergency stop at a speed of 155 km/hr, prioritizing safety under standard protocols.

Air India (AI) flight AI2403 was scheduled to depart Delhi (DEL) for Kolkata (CCU) at approximately 5:30 PM local time on July 21, 2025. The Airbus A321 aircraft began its takeoff roll but was forced to halt mid-acceleration due to a sudden technical warning.

The pilots, adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), quickly initiated an emergency braking maneuver.

The aircraft came to a complete stop on the runway, effectively preventing any potential in-flight risks. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew.

Air India released an official statement confirming that the flight was aborted after a technical issue was detected during the takeoff roll.
